The 10-minute semi-pilot does have two celebrity cameos, Elizabeth Banks (probably best known for her voice character in The Lego Movie, she is shown doing Janice's hair and suggests adding Celebrity Cameos... that's the joke) and Topher Grace (on a set with Miss Piggy who she gives the longest muppet/human kiss I can recall).

Chip was a recurring background character, made as a caricature of one of the Muppets' writers back in 1989... a guy named Bill Prady, who's now the Real Life Executivest Producer of the new show... of course he'd appear.

People who are familiar with Liz Lemon might remember Jack Donaghy's wife Avery Jessup, who was kidnapped by North Korea. She was played by Elizabeth Banks.

Banks also stars as Effie Trinket in the the Hunger Games films, and is in both of the Pitch Perfect movies -- in addition, she directed the second one, which is best known around here for being the film that crushed Mad Max: Fury Road at the box office.

She is not an unknown.

It's funny, I've rewatched a lot of the original Muppet Show as an adult and I feel like it always struck a good balance between "kid" humor and "adult" humor. It's weird watching this trailer and seeing the muppets with real, adult lives and problems. I guess the idea of a variety show with musical numbers and guest stars feels a little dated nowadays, but the new show-within-the-show could totally be a Late Show-style thing with Kermit as the host. They even have a house band!

I am also obligated in every Muppets thread to point out that my uncle was a muppeteer on Muppets Take Manhattan and my aunt has his movie poster from it signed by Henson, Frank Oz, and a bunch of the other original Muppet folks. I must find a way to steal that.

It's more nuanced than that. Kevin Clash didn't prey on children; he had relationships with young men whom he believed to be of the age of consent because they lied about their ages to join adults-only hookup websites. I don't think any of his partners were under the age of 16, which is the age of consent in many but not all states. In the end, he was never convicted of any crime.

Don't expect payoffs in the series from everything hinted at in the 'pilot', since they declared in the ComicCon panel that they've developed the series differently: "The whole show takes place behind the scenes at Miss Piggy's talk show, 'Up Late with Miss Piggy', that airs sensibly behind the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Kermit is her Executive Producer, Gonzo is her Head Writer with Pepe and Rizzo on the writing staff, Scooter is her Talent Coordinator, Fozzie is her sidekick on-air [big laughs], Bobo is Stage Manager, Sam the Eagle is Head of Broadcast Standards for the network [bigger laughs]. So everybody from the Muppets has a position on the show, and it's about the intrigue that happens behind the scenes, but also at home with their emotional and personal lives." (After which they introduced the show Producer who used to work on "The Office's" 'mockumentary style)

Also revealed at the panel: Fozzie's human girlfriend will continue, while Gonzo tries out "online dating" (although that was news to Dave Goelz & Gonzo at the panel as 'Pepe' and 'Rizzo' then popped up to explain the concept). Fozzie reveals just how much he NEEDS the writers. And Kermit & Piggy's 'former relationship' will definitely be a recurring plot point. Kermit's new girlfriend Denise (not on the show, she works in Marketing) will NOT be the same puppet as in the 'pilot'. Executive Producer Kermit hired 'his friends' behind Piggy's back, and after the initial blowup (probably before the time frame of the series), it'll be an ongoing issue. The Swedish Chef will be doing Craft Servcies. Rowlf is not part of the show-within-the-show but owns "Rowlf's Tavern" across the street from the studio where the crew hangs out while he plays 'Piano Dog'. As for other characters, "we can see anybody from the Muppet Universe" but no more specifics were offered. Maybe Dr. Honeydew and Beaker could be doing a 'tech startup' that Piggy invests her money in (that idea is © by OneSwellFoop NetWorks as if Disney cares). And if Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are NOT the 'house band', I'll be shocked.
