In the Game of Football, You Win or You Die

"As NFL players start training camp, they’ve got to make weight and learn the playbook. These are the requirements to make the team in the fall. But among players, another task has become equally important, and it’s causing problems throughout NFL camps. You must finish watching “Game of Thrones,” because the loudest debate in NFL locker rooms right now is not over Deflategate; it’s over television spoilers. With the exception of off-season workouts, this is the first time some teams have gotten together en masse in more than eight months. Naturally, talk at the lunch table or in the training room turns to the wildly popular HBO show, which wrapped its fifth season in June." (SPOILERS)

Maybe some NFL players will make cameos as big bruisers with swords on the show? The Green Bay Packers recently cameoed in Pitch Perfect 2, and Game of Thrones has some great cameos, and rumors suggest HBO may be trying to land GoT fan Prince Harry for a bit part.

Has Kit Harington cut his hair yet?

You mean a popular TV show is talked about by the prime demographic of that TV show? Great work, The Wall Street Journal.

I was thinking that only skinny geek types were fans of heroic fantasy when I was young but then I remembered the jock types I knew who were into Excalibur and the Conan movies back then.

It's a shame Kluwe isn't around for this.

If Prince Harry isn't Dickon Tarly, second born son and heir of Randyll "Ian McShane" Tarly, and the broest, laddest, dumbest medieval frat ladbro to ever awkwardly attempt to cajole his nerdy older brother into sneaking out of the Citadel to go for a cheeky Nando's, I will weep bitter tears and wail and gnash my teeth, for pure glory has been denied to the world.

Seriously, I know Harry does charity stuff and all, but he can take like six months to be an actual cast member and not a cameo! He won't even have to act that hard, and if they want him to do anything serious, BAM! just stick him in a room with Ian McShane while he chews on the furniture. Worked for Timothy Olyphant.

They've got Ian McShane and Max Von Sydow for next season, which I assume (based on, y'know, those two guys and their whole deal, acting-wise) means that previously-unplumbed depths of pain, horror, and degradation will be shot into viewer's faces.

Ian Mcshane??? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Ive got McShane penciled in for Euron Greyjoy. Von Sydow is supposedly going to be Bloodraven/the 3 Eyed Raven, in tree form, so you'd think there'd be a limit to how much he could do.

Randyll Tarly I believe. The interaction with Sam will be priceless.

Here is the casting call people think is him:

Father. Aged 50’s to 60’s, he’s one of the greatest soldiers in Westeros- a humorless martinet, severe and intimidating. He demands martial discipline in the field and in his home. It’s described as “a very good part” for next year and that he’s “centrally involved” in a protagonist’s storyline.

He was going to kill a lot of them, but no one loves them enough.
