I think that mobile version of Mystery Peeper would sell quite well in today's app market. In my mind's eye, it's a lot like Five Nights At Freddy's.

If we're talking about fake video games, I have to share these lost games based on TV's LOST that I came up with a few years ago.

Relevent previous thread, although everything in that page is REAL and ACTUAL I tell you and not at all completely made up.

Oh my God some of these nail the old gaming aesthetic so well. This one especially looks like something direct from the pages of GamePro.

You may also be interested in Fort Meow, which is cat-and-haunted-house themed, but the cats are antagonists.

I really want to play every game in this Clickhole list of classic games. Goblins And Larger Goblins would have eaten so many quarters.

Falling down: The game

These are great; bringing me back to 2004-06(?) when I was in making box art for a few video games.

vgboxart.com had a small community back then of people making custom box art for fake video games that we wish existed as well as yet to be released games.

I just logged into the site for the first time in a few years and I give them respect for the community looks like it's still going strong, 10 years, although it appears that they're now focusing more on current games that exist as well as custom box art for music and film.

Holy shit, they still have a couple that I made, including this one of Tony Hawk. imagined as an Atari box. God, that's a little ugly, but hey, I made it with the GIMP as a teenager. I can't remember why I stopped (likely starting college & my interest in video games waning), but there's certainly memories of being frustrated with the GIMP...

Back in the day, somethingawful.com also had some photoshop contests about video game box art although there's certainly some (likely sexist and crude/frat-boy/fanboy humor) chaff along with some good ones like these games designed in the aesthetics of classic book covers (Penguin) and film posters.

I've descended into PICO 8 madness the last few weeks and have as a result been realizing my own version of this idea in earnest, making a series of franchise cash-in games from an alternate universe where David Lynch's 1984 film was a gigantic success instead of a flop and dodgy game developer companies rushed various releases to market for Christmas.

I've got more I want to make still, but there's already Shai Hulud, Thopter Escape, and Butlerian Jihad.

We did! Or rather grobstein did, which is how I fell down this rabbit hole in the first place. It's really, really great.

If this appeals to you and you're a tabletop RPG type, The Secrets of Cats is pretty much exactly this.
