yes it sucks that fiction promotion and marketing departments are so gutted that one person is in charge of hundreds of titles. Yes all the work required to promote a book as a author is unpaid, and it is work and it is hard and it further drives take home pay down to below minimum wage, and yes it doesn't matter too much cause best sellers are decided months ago at meetings you don't get to go to ..but that being said

Ouch. That hits close to home.

This hit close to home. My first novel was just published by a small press, and it's even more difficult to get any attention when you don't have a major publishing house behind you. Ugh. Off to facebook to see if I can translate any of my friends' goodwill into Amazon reviews... kill me

My first novel was with one of the Big Six (there was still a Big Six at the time,) and yeah. After I busted my ass on promotion (handwritten postcards to literally every single independent bookseller in the United States that handled my genre/category,) my book sold "surprisingly well" in the first week.

As a reward for my hard work, my editor CCed me on a note she sent to the sales staff. It said, since my book was on track to be a sleeper hit, she encouraged them all to read it and to recommend it to their clients.
