Wait, it is?

*looks around for clubs*

... Aw, shoot.

Yeah, the Gothic is doing much better than the goth at the moment.

I'm finally fashionable again?

You were never not.
It was the world.
It was wrong.

Gothic Spooky Victorian

Call things what they are, bookists! It wasn't Mary Shelley who brought down the Romans!

Did it ever really go away? It feels like The Gothic is making a return every five years or even more frequent than that.

It wasn't Mary Shelley who brought down the Romans!

Some historians say that her carelessness with time travel was one of the contributing factors.

Goth versus Gothic:

Big box, little box, big box, little box
My candlelight-weary eyes could not discern whether the parcel recently arrived at Castle Pharnis was too wide for the spiral passage leading to The Wives' Tower.

Grab the bat, hug the bat, throw the bat, kick the bat
I reached out, plucked the squealing bat from the air, and held it to my bosom to warm it. The wretched thing bit me there, in a bestial parody of my Lord Vandermeer's earlier passion; I threw the rodent to the floor and kicked its broken body away into the pitch-black corner of the attic.

Because shit sucks right now, so we might as well embrace an era where shit also sucked, but looked cooler doing it.

Don't call it a "comeback"...

Infinitewindow, I just heard Tom Hiddleston reading those Gothic lines of yours.

Unfortunately, it was only in my mind's ear, and not with him on my Chesterfield sofa.

Alas.

Gothic is about things decaying and breaking apart. It's totally reasonable for gothic as a genre to be making a big, dramatic and florid comeback. It's about the frameworks of family, domesticty ritual and tradition giving way underneath you, dropping you into a pit of chaos and confusion. It's about seeing the life your parents led and your grandparents led lose all meaning, to see the history of your line decoupled from the future, leaving you alone in the ruins of the once-was and never-will-be. It's living in the graveyard of your future, watching the bones of the past rot. It's the promise of the new turning into the threat, technology that once could have saved you growing fangs and devouring you. It's gambling your humanity and losing, and every option you have to change that is worse than the last.

I mean my generation has gone from watching the tail end of the glory days of Science! to rising seas, acid skies and groundwater you can set on fire. The promise of a robot maid and a dinner in a capsule to being made unemployed by a mechanized production like and a dinner of antidepressants. We can't hope to work our way through school, get married, buy a home and settle down - we wander like the mariner, we fight our way through the tangles of the old expectations (cue every news article about "What's Wrong with Millenials Today") and when we try to build something new it collapses on top of us.

Also I don't need a lint roller because I only ever adopt black cats and I have the full Cure discography and nice boots.
