I watched They Might Be Giants perform at Mardi Gras in St. Louis a few years ago. The temperature was 9 if I recall correctly. Flansburgh said "if we suck, it's because none of us can feel our fingers."

The mud in front of the stage had turned to a huge ice sheet and we mostly huddled for warmth like penguins. Except a couple of drunk dudebro assholes in front of us who were trying to mosh. Near the end of the set this tiny woman finally had had enough and clocked one of them in the jaw. That seemed to have a calming effect.

Amazing lyrics. (B-side contains the fight song!)

Keep one comforting thought, Moosylvania, while you're in the mud,
Though they may break your every bone, they'll never break your...blood.

I acquired that record from the Dudley DoRight Emporium, a small store for J. Ward & Company merchandise they kept in front of the animation studios on Sunset Blvd. (on the 'Sunset Strip', which was a better location for retail than for animation). Another landmark on the property was the Bullwinkle and Rocky statue which survived after everything else toon-related on the property.

The pilgrimage to the DDRE (as nobody called it) was one of my first outings with my first car (a 'new' Chevy Vega, argh) and soon after, I packed the "Salute to Moosylvania" with some of the other odder items in my vinyl collection to show Dr. Demento at one of his personal appearances. He already owned that one, but a comedy 45 ("The Chocolate Freak", which compared 'chocolate addiction' to other 'dangerous drugs') was new to him - he asked to borrow it - of course I said yes - and made a tape of it that he played on his then-LA-local show and mailed back to me in a protective autographed record sleeve. I was not a typical teenager.

People wanting to read more about the creation of Moosylvania, the opening of the Do-Right Emporium, the dedication of the Bullwinkle statue, and other such legendary tales of flying squirrel/moose history should read the detailed (often, overly detailed) book The Moose That Roared (2000), which I finished just a few nights ago.

Also included: Crusader Rabbit, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Fractured Fairy Tales, George of the Jungle, Superchicken, and much else.
