The scene that helped The Revenant earn an oscar nomination for VFX is hard to watch. It's also disturbingly realistic, even though a stunt man substituted for an actual bear. How'd they do that? By consulting bear experts and studying videos of actual attacks. [Warning: last link is brutal]

In an alternate universe, the cubs became the Berenstein bears.

Bear? Pffffft. More impressed by the VFX work that put SNL's Leslie Jones in the bear's place for that "let's put more black people in movies" clip package on last night's Oscars.

Seriously, can't stop thinking about it. For a multitude of reasons.

The last link is Face of Death material (and therefore a questionable addition to this post). At one point the bear seemed to be ripping off limbs or something.

Werner Herzog really missed out on a great youtube moment in not releasing a reaction video of him watching the Revenant trailer.

If the original VFX peeps were involved, it was probably realively easy. They had access to the footage with the stuntman edited out, but without the bear.

I think you should not keep it, you should destroy it. I think that's what you should do.</herzog>

I was thinking about waaaaaay more than just the VFX work involved in putting Leslie Jones in that scene, in that there's a whole lot that springs to mind when one sees a film clip altered to show a black women trying to disembowel a white guy with her bare hands. But the VFX work was nicely done.

The worst part of the video in the last link is the snide, facetious voice over.

Like, hey writers for nil-budget TruTV clip show: I know you hate your lives and regret every decision that brought you to this point, but still? That's a person being mauled by a bear. Turn the glib snarkery down, like, 85%.

Heh heh, only 85%. I love this place, I really do.

Digression: I have a fondness for Jean-Jacques Annaud's swell 1988 film, The Bear, told mostly from the bear's point of view, and starring the Oscar-recognized Bart the Bear.

I can't watch the scene or the movie, but i love the thought of various other beings composited in to maul Leo. They should release the raw footage, so people can sub themselves in.

first of all there should be a reel featuring every antagonist from every film he's ever been in. although would titanic be billy zane in white tie or an actual iceberg?

1988 The Bear has a mushroom trip from the point of view of a cub. It's pretty much the high water mark of cinema.

Why did the guy get into the bear enclosure? Seems like bad planning.
