Marlene was VERY passionate about her war work. She was resolutely antiwar cause of her experience growing up in post WW1 Germany but when push came to shove she threw herself into USO and OSS war work , from replacing Rita Hayworth as Orson Wells' magic show/counter programming to the Hollywood Canteen to being an actual friendly interrogator for German POWs who might open up more to a famous glamorous German film star who said "We know YOU did nothing wrong and were forced into this but maybe, could you tell us what they planned to do..." Lili Marlane was broadcast as anti-war agitprop in German and an attempt to ban the song failed cause it was too damn popular.

It really hurt her career, cause she was out of the movies for so long. But she didn't go into it half-measured.
