Medieval Music - 'Hardcore' Party Mix -- "The most rhythmic, upbeat, party medieval music out there, put together in a mix." If you need something to cool down after that 40 minute set, YouTuber VacnaPaul also put together a two hour "daydream mix" of fantasy music, from the video game scores by Jeremy Soule.

I'm really shocked there isn't any Wolgemut in that mix. They're sort of the gold standard for this wonderful music.

Double-reed instruments, particularly the shawm, were basically the EDM of 13th-century Europe.

It's what all the kids were dancing to in order to piss off the olds.

I'd turn you on to some Palestrina, man, but I don't think you'd get it.

Listening to this makes me feel like I should be watching some sort of sexy medieval battle montage.

Gonna just plug my old post about Corvus Corvax playing live at Wacken Open-Air with Wadokyo.

Thanks for this, flt! There was an interesting show on BBC Radio 3 a few months back about how reedy, buzzing, drone-y & generally rough-edged a lot of pre-19th-century European music-making must have been. Vaguely related—Cantus Orbis: Some Examples of Medieval Drone (a mix of ‘drone-heavy / repetitive music written between the 5th and 15th centuries’) - Vol.1; Vol. 2.

I found the radio show I mentioned above: Lost Sounds (‘Clare Salaman on forgotten instruments which were once part of everyday musical life’) [audio is UK only]… which led me to a news article about Ms. Salaman A different tune: Making music with strange and ancient instruments… whichin turn led me to her Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments website.

fuck me, i just realized that this youtube music is probably recordings made recently, and not, like, the actual people from 600 years ago playing it

Yup, sorry - no archaeoacoustics here.

If you wanted to know more about the music: Medieval music on Wikipedia - I'm being lazy at the moment and not figuring out which type(s) of Medieval music are actually present here, hoping someone more informed than I am will drop by and fill in the gaps.
