2016 does suck. But it at least add a new dimension to this comic from the beginning of 2016, making it hilarious in retrospect, which is nice. As Kingsley Amis wrote in Lucky Jim, "nice things are nicer than nasty ones".

If we're going to try and sum up the year using only pop culture references, I nominate this one: Wubba Lubba dub-dub.

Stranger Things. If you'd told me that one of the best things about 2016 would be a sleeper hit that could best be described as Stephen King's version of Freaks and Geeks, well, I'm not sure that I would have even laughed, but it was delightful.

My previous comment may have referred to a catchphrase that is slightly out of date by now, but I feel like it's justified. This is 2016, where 85% of the most popular movies are sequels, adaptations, and remakes.

Do not get seduced into watching The Lobster after seeing the charming clip on Advent Calendar Day 2! It is all despair forever. Of course you may disagree, just read some of the FanFare post and check out Does The Dog Die first so you know what you're in for.

24 days until this shit year is over.

The Cubs won the World Series! But other than that...yeah, I've got nothing.

There was a really nice post going around tumblr awhile back that had a list of some of the good things that happened in 2016 that just didn't get the same amount of press as the bad stuff.

Things like:
-Thanks to the ice bucket challenge the gene responsible for ALS has been found, meaning we are closer to an effective treatment.
-The Anglican church resolved to solemnize same-sex unions the same as opposite-sex unions which required a super majority of all three orders of the church (lay, clergy, bishop).
-Portugal ran its entire nation solely on renewable energy for four days straight.
-Harriet Tubman is going to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
-Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar.

This year has been kind of a trash fire for sure, but it's nice to know that good things are still happening and progress is still being made in some ways.

Not pop culture, but:

The Dakota Pipeline protest was successful (at least temporarily), and brought Native American issues to the forefront (equal with other minorities at least).

The shitty year in politics finally caused mainstream America to come face to face with the institutionalized discrimination for all minorities, especially (in no particular order) women, African-Americans, Muslims, Latinx, Native Americans, and Trans* Americans.

I'd add more but my break is over 😊

"I'm begging for help! I'm screaming for help!" seems entirely more apt.

Are we picking the thing that doesn't fit? Because I think I know.

Anyone involved in Hamilton's had an awesome year.
Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Laurie Hernandez, other awesome Olympians I can't recall names of right now.
This insane job situation actually resolved itself in the sanest way possible, and that's not something you hear of too often.
