The Monty Python jokes in the Python programming language

See the big ones broken down here. Python is named after the British humor troupe, Monty Python. In fact, its creator resisted snake imagery for a long time. This young Canadian programmer breaks down the big jokes and then previews her efforts to find more.

If Monty Python didn't exist, it probably would've been named after The Goodies (yum yum).

I just finished a college Intro to CS class in which pretty much everyone but me was 18 or 19 years old. The textbook used Monty Python jokes in the examples, and I totally wondered whether the kids were getting them at all. Do geeky kids in the US still watch Monty Python? How about geeky kids in other countries, because there were a whole lot of international students in that class? And if not, is it off-putting when your CS textbook is full of basically nonsensical examples about killer rabbits and the comparative velocity of laden and unladen swallows?

I have been responsible for courses being themed after The Phantom Tollbooth, and the first course I TA'd was themed on Star Trek, which I had never seen before our course prep week.

I still don't know the first thing about Star Trek (because CS course geeks are not necessarily pop culture geeks), but I also hope I inspired at least a few people to read The Phantom Tollbooth.

dfm500, Jr. is 13. He and his friends all love it.

Worry not, for there is hope.
