"The barge-tug combo Great Lakes Trader-Joyce L. VanEnkevort arrived in Duluth on Tuesday morning to pick up a load of iron ore pellets. It already was carrying a cargo of ice". Alternate YT link (ambient sound only, no narration). On Monday of this week, the US Coast Guard began ice-breaking operations on the Great Lakes. Here in photos.
That barge/tug looked like something out of a John Carpenter film.

Thanks! I love this stuff. If it weren't for the Blue I'd never know what Lakers were. Happy holidays all.

Well, at least this murderous year hasn't resulted in "The Wreck of the Joyce L. VanEnkevort", which is good, because it doesn't quite scan.

They actually did something very similar on World War Z, where they covered a ship in wax so it looked like ice. Apparently it was supposed to be a ghost ship coming out of icy fog at some point but it didn't make it into the final cut. The waxed up ship was in my local harbour for 2 weeks.

I wonder how many people on the Coast Guard icebreaker are Metafilter members.

no idea, but I can tell you that metafilter is one of the few social-media type sites not blocked by DHS webmonitoring...

Sometimes, I think it'd be cool to trade my cushy office job for a life on the seas. This is not one of those times.

Wait, so what is the purpose of that bridge thing over the entrance to the harbor? Does it prevent ice from pushing in? That sea smoke is amazing!
