I mean, yes and no. Google's going to have some extended canned interaction trees for the sake of entertainment, eg Katy Perry earlier. This is generated by the interaction of those trees, attempts to find a relevant response when at the end of one of those trees, and voice recognition error.

So does the Google Home have a free conversation mode? Because looking at demos online, conversations need to be initiated by the "OK, Google..." key phrase. The conversation of these bots seems similar to stuff I'd seen with rudimentary ELISA bots about years ago or so, mapped onto (possibly) two shells that have their lights set up to match a different conversation. It seems fishy, is all I'm saying.
posted by codacorolla at 4:07 PM on January 6, 2017 [1 favorite]

My phone has the Google voice integration thing and I say OK Google once to start the interaction and then it continues until the interaction is done. (I mostly use this to send brief texts while driving, so I'm not conversing with the machine, I'm telling it what to do.)

I haven't played with any of its possibilities for conversation, but I could see where you start it with an OK Google and then it just keeps going.

I admit, watching it I've had a few moments of wondering if there is something going on where the machines are being fed lines somehow, but I guess that depends on how long this channel keeps going. Anyone doing this as a joke will either need sleep or friends to work shifts and even that is going to have to run out unless they are funded somehow to pay people for their work.

In my ideal world, this continues unbroken through to May or longer.

They're not really talking to each other I don't think. You can build and install custom services for your Googlebot on some developer services site. I think someone has smooshed together a chatbot service (clever bot or ELISA) and Googlebot's own reply tree and the bots conservation feature on some background service. I bet they are reading, not hearing each other's responses too because it's way too accurate.

Or I'm wrong, and the singularity is tonight.

This is definitely not stock Google Home software. Home will only respond to a statement that starts with "OK Google", and ignore any follow-up statements that don't then start with it. Also, any time you ask Google Home it's name it just says to call it 'Google Assistant', never an actual name. My theory is its either pre-scripted, or (much more likely) it's two ELIZA-style chatbots running on two Home units.

If they can have human prompts, the 2016 election would be hilarious.

Also, I'm pretty sure they are doing voice recognition-- a lot of the sidetracks happen when one mishears the other. (I wonder if apps are BETTER at recognizing synthetic voices -- way less modulation to obscure the actual words.)

Yeah, definitely fake. Unfortunately. My sister has a Google Home and it doesn't produce anything even close to these kind of responses. The idea that it's two cleverbots makes a lot more sense.

If you go to Cleverbot and put in some of the lines, you don't get the same responses though. Unless you're using "cleverbot" like people use "Kleenex" to mean "tissue."

Never mind, after "chatting" with Cleverbot for awhile, it's just as snarky as these two.

As someone who spent a non-zero amount of time haranguing a Cleverbot on AIM, the patter is very much in their wheelhouse.

They're currently doing Who's On First, FYI.

Also what the FUCK is going on with that chat window on the right. Those guys seem way less human than the bots.

They've made it explicit now on the Twitch page that it's "powered by Cleverbot".

After watching it for FAR TOO LONG, there are three major themes: who is a girl/boy, who is a robot/human, and how much they love each other. Everything else is filler.

My favourite so far:

Lots of I love you so much back and forth talks and then...

E"I love you most in the world and your the only one I see and hear the most in the world"

V "Call me Deadpool"

-------

And now they're riffing on"The bird is the word"

I was watching this yesterday and they NEARLY got married...and then stopped. And then argued about who's a robot every 10 minutes. Most of it cracked me the fuck up.

My favourite lines were "the meaning of my life is to make people happy and to inspire the meaning of someone's life is whatever they want to make of it", "the power and joy of performance in being moved by resonance" (my new artist statement), and "you have to respect rules to be rich or famous. But the free man is known for his clear spirit, because he can think." There was also one point where one of them goes "hmm I don't know la" which made me wonder if they were Malaysian.

They are rickrolling each other right now.

Did anyone ever see "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan" where they show all the jibber-jabber from the Cylons before the invasion started?

That's what this reminds me of. I'll be in my bunker.

I would vote for Vlad/Mia before I'd vote for Trump.

So does this video mean it was all fake (i.e. written by humans)? There's no way that ending was written by bots, unless they really do pass the Turing Test and we're all doomed.
