Musings on Iraq

Musings on Iraq. Since 2008, journalist Joel Wing has kept a comprehensive, often day-by-day account on the politics and military actions surrounding the ongoing war in Iraq. His blog entries are at length, detailed, and thoroughly cited.

Currently he's running a daily account on the Battle for Mosul:
The Islamic State used chemical weapons while shelling east Mosul. According to doctors from the International Red Cross 12 people were injured in this attack, and said that it looked like a blister agent was used. Previously, on March 1 suspected chlorine shells were used in another mortar attack on the eastern section of the city. IS has been known to work on chemical weapons before, and alleged stocks and laboratories have been captured in the past. It has also deployed chlorine before, but this appeared to be a far more dangerous agent.

The "breaking news" media mentality has a serious problem with an event like the retaking Mosul that occurs over a time span greater than a day. This blog will be a great goto when my curiosity about what's happening there gets tweaked. But as a defense of network news, wow, it's a complex issue to summarize in less than a small academic tome.

This small kernel (in a linked opinion piece) seems an interesting observation about the challenges of peace in that area:

Now that the battle for west Mosul has begun however the Golden Division and many other units have been pulled out of the eastern section. That has left some army units, the National Security Service, police, a Shabak Hashd unit, and new local community groups to hold and secure the east. This hodgepodge of forces is having a difficult time doing their job. First they do not cooperate, creating holes in their coverage that can be exploited. Second they actively compete with each other for authority over the city. Third there are more and more reports of them carrying out arbitrary arrests and searches and seizures.
