Yeah, the article also includes some surprising information about donkey maintenance.

Do we have a metafilter post simulator now?

I do some marathon sleeping with our rescue cats, but they are expected to take care of their own gentleman bits, because that's where I draw the line.

"It was already dark when the first vans full of Amish runners pulled into my driveway" is a pretty strong opener, though. It's got a real mirror-world-Fear-And-Loathing vibe to it - strap in for the healthiest, most wholesome ride of your life!

As a runner's wife that loves animals way more than the average person and has a dream to start some sort of animal sanctuary farm thing, this panders almost directly to me. This entire article is delightful, and is a fantastic start to Friday. I wonder if I can convince Mr Fig that he needs some sort of hooved running companion...

What an ass!

Loved the anecdote about the Amish woman passing on the uphill.

During a trail run one steaming July afternoon, I was struggling up a steep climb when I was caught by Liz, a young Amish woman.

“This hill is a killer,” I panted.

“I can tell,” Liz said, patting me on the back before scrambling past in her full-length dress, apron and bonnet.

“O.K.,” I said. “What’s a sheath?”

“His penis.”

“We’ve got to clean his penis?”

“Not we — you. You better learn now because if he lives, you’ll be doing it every three or four months.”

"So I traded in my donkey for a dog. Never looked back."

I guess there is no reason why there would not be Amish running clubs, but it is not what I expected to learn about today.

I know nothing about the Amish, because I would have guessed, if I had been pressed to guess, that they aren't generally encouraged to run about in shoes made on the other side of the world from the latest artificial materials and processes. Not that I would expect them to go running in wooden clogs, either. I just would have been less surprised to hear that they don't run at all except maybe during that wild period of their youth when they all make their own running shoes and sprint clear to Toledo and back, stopping only to grow a small travelling beard.
