On the sight of a lede buried waaaaay up in there

See, this is why I always identify myself when I call, even in this age of ubiquitous caller ID. Because I know that I'm a zookeeper calling an obstetrician about a pregnant gorilla , but my universe is not everyone's universe.

Lovely. For some reason I thought she was going to spin the baby. But if it's OK to come out while facing backwards, then forceps will do. Yay babies!

I love this part:

"Not only that, but she happened to deliver a gorilla while being 28 weeks pregnant herself. Afterwards, McCurdy returned to the hospital to write up some notes and have a prenatal consultation. Then, she drove home to her husband and her three children."

Neat story, and a fantastic photo of the newborn. Was anyone else put off by (and, also, a gorilla) the writing?

My first was delivered via forceps and that recovery was a bitch, so my heart goes out to Mom. (Perhaps not really comparable, given that I'm not a gorilla.)

Slothrup: writing didn't particularly bother me—what are you seeing that I didn't?

“One of the keepers behind me said, You sound like an obstetrician. I said, That’s because I am.”

I want this to be a funny little "aw, men" aside in a human interest piece. But the eyes, they insist on rolling.

There once was a pregnant gorilla
Who commanded a mighty flotilla
But the date of the birth
Brought confusion and mirth
When the baby was born a chinchilla

Why do you assume the speaker was a man? Most of the staff in the photos is female.

I got caught by "only trained observers can tell that something important is happening," in that church-suit, class-counselor way, like you'd say to a child, followed by "...the miracle of birth" ۶(●̮̮̃•̃)۶

A nice story, though. I've read other accounts of where the vets have stepped back to let (mostly) human-facing doctors in and they're always interesting.

I would like several gorilla babers please.

Awwww, so great. Also that picture of the happy dopey baby gorilla is my favorite, I have a million pictures of my kids as newborns making the same face.

This is great. Lots of human doctors working on gorillas - Zoo Atlanta has a big collaborative project with cardiologists who come work on their Gorillas, sometimes even as far as performing heart surgeries!
