How much is a color worth?

Lawrence Herbert helped each color, shade and hue have its own place in the world, I wonder if he knew what he did ‪What I do professionally is mostly based upon what I think is best for the images, but sometimes the image will include something from a sponsor. Then I do my best to give the sponsor “their color.”

Hey New York Times, you realize you run a web site, right? I realize printing a ton of exciting colors might be tricky and fraught with complaints over mis-representation, but the online article could use something more than the red-hued bars at the top of the article.

Otherwise, fascinating read, thanks!

Oh gosh, a friend of mine from high school wrote this! I saw it like a dozen times on FB today, I'm so thrilled to see it here!

"... but the online article could use something more than the red-hued bars at the top of the article."

There are color samples (browser rendered, I think) with captions at the end of the article. It made me distrust my phone, though. (Why, yes, I do own several consumer display color calibration tools. Why do you ask?)

As it appears on my phone, I love that Lance Armstrong yellow -- that's pretty much my favorite yellow. I like something close to the bright (but rich) of French's yellow mustard. And that Trump red, I'm sorry to say, is close to my favorite color of all -- pretty much exactly the red of fresh blood spilled on, say, a white porcelain sink.

That bright, rich red has always been my favorite color, since I was a young child. I'm not strongly inclined to disagree with the experts quoted in the article who believe some color responses are biologically determined, though we should always take such assertions with more than a grain of salt. The association between red and blood seems very plausible, and I can't really say it's not a factor in my own preference, given it's pretty much exactly that color. Maybe I bled when I was young and was fascinated by such an arresting hue. I dunno.

My sister's favorite color changed by the time she became an adult. This has always upset me -- the idea that her favorite color could change. In my mind, her favorite color is always going to be dark purple, as was the case when she was young, because, well, for me a person's favorite color is like some deep view into their psyche, something inseparably bound up in the essence of who they are. That someone could change their favorite color disturbs me more than a little bit. All is chaos, the end is nigh!

I'm very strongly drawn toward the bright primary colors, so long as they are a bit darker and more rich like a reflected color as opposed to a bright light. This is why I'm a little frustrated with my Philips Hue bulbs - the 2nd gen can manage somewhat better blues and greens, but it's still a long way from, say, theater gels. The reds are good, though. I really enjoy keeping a room in a deep red. But I really yearn for truly powerful, deep color lighting. I want in blue what I can get with red. Like environments in Kieślowski's Blue. I mean, I know it's probably not quite possible to light an environment equal to what you get with lighting+filters on film (or digital post), but I'd really like a blue that you could metaphorically swim through.

My tastes in color are quite vulgar, I suppose, but that's okay with me. I prefer hearty, simple, spicy food, too.

I laughed when I read that every designer has Pantone books… and looked over at the two within arms reach on my desk.
