Cinema Cats

Cinema Cats is a website dedicated to listing as many appearances of domestic cats in films and tv shows as it can.

I think my favourite film filled with incidental and background cats is probably L'Atalante.

But does it have Kedi???

Oh yes it does. All is right.

Black cats can’t help it if they show up at an inopportune time.

Oh, they can; they just don’t care.

Of course they care! It's their entire job.

Not the entire job. There’s also baleful glaring, soulful glowering, lurking, kibble quibbling, strategic pooping, and the occasional loving headbutt.

I'm pretty sure you meant to say:
Cinema Cats is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats screened into these films, or why.

I support this, and am delighted to see dng lead off with L'Atalante.

These are all well and good, but I must now see Repossessed for that closet bit.

strategic pooping

I'm picturing cats in airforce uniforms sitting in a classroom, with an instructor standing in front of a blackboard with the words STRATEGIC POOPING written in big bold letters... And then some kind of map with various spots marked with X and arrows pointing to and fro

Love that it includes shorts and animated movies, some of which you can just click on and watch.

It is missing Eye of the Cat. Maybe evil cats were left out of the listing.

You’re probably thinking of tactical pooping.

Missing my favorite, the cat scene in Truffaut's "Day For Night".

Missing my favorite, the cat scene in Truffaut's "Day For Night".

It does have that cat. And also another Truffaut cat scene (which was the inspiration for the Day For Night scene, and also for this post, as I discovered this site after watching The Soft Skin the other day and looking up that cat scene from it to show to a friend.)

You are right. I missed it because they listed it under the French name, "La Nuit Américaine".
Quel dommage.

Ooh thanks for figuring out that the site lists films with the original title w0mbat. I was puzzled that "Take Care of My Cat" was missing, but then I looked for "goyangi" and all was well again.

BUT! When I searched for "neko"... they seem to have missed Rentaneko (2012) aka Rent-a-Cat

This is a pretty good time-sink - I've spent about an hour checking on films I did know had cats in, and trying to think of ones they've missed, including the lovely but unpronounceable French film Chacun Cherche son Chat.

Also, because I love bad puns, I was tickled to see that the cat who plays the hairless Mr Bigglesworth in the Austin Powers films is called Ted Nude-Gent.

Is this a new site, or are the stars simply aligning? I just searched "the innocents movie cat" and got back Mrs. Grose petting a stocky tabby, and then went to look up all the other cat sightings I could remember.

No Neko Atsume no ie though :(

Nice writeup on my favourite cinematic cat scene, from Altman's The Long Goodbye.

Jonesy, though, might be the luckiest/smartest/craftiest cat in all of cinema.

According to IMDB, that's the king of finicky cats Morris in The Long Goodbye. Morris was also in the film Shamus. I was a little disappointed last week when I couldn't find any "Burt Reynolds, who starred alongside '70s icon Morris The Cat"-style obits.

If you like this, you will also enjoy film critic Anne Billson's excellent and definitive book Cats on Film.

I started my search with Logan's Run, which is one of my favorite cat films.

I thought this meant "Cats that live in cinemas" :-D
Like Duke who lives in the Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, or his beloved (and cranky) predecessor Marzipan the Astor Cat. I'm proud to say I was scratched by her once....
