The U.S. Navy Marine Mammal program began in 1959, training sea lions, dolphins and other species reportedly with a mission of detecting sea mines and other defensive measures. This program has seen renewed interest this year with hopes of tapping into the "innate sensing capabilities of living organisms that are ubiquitous in the oceans." But the U.S. isn't the only world power to get in on this action, as Norway has made friends this week with an as-yet-unnamed Defecting Russian Spy Beluga Whale.
