This is entirely worthwhile for "Centaur for Disease Control" even if nothing else were funny.

And "the stablative" is pretty great.

Another for Centaur for Disease Control, lo, I am slain.

Also oh man I love learning about intracommunity memes in other people's communities.

Like, finding out that VIRGIL LOVES BEES is not just a one-off joke, but an ongoing meme spawning its own sub-sub-memes and crossbreeding with other bee-related memes from other corners of Tumblr, is such excellent news.

THE PUNIC WAR ONE *DYING*

The classics side of tumblr consistently makes me laugh until my sides ache. It's my favorite side of tumblr even though a good 60% of the time I have to look up the joke because I don't quite know enough. As a result, the jokes are often really educational! For me, anyway. So much of the Greek and Roman history/lit especially seems be tailor-made for meme culture - it's wondrous to behold and a good reminder that people don't change. But it's also just enjoyable seeing a subject which seemed super serious in school and in which so many scholars/writers in the past have also taken so seriously be turned into "Distracted Girlfriend" or awful, amazing puns or "Roman AU where everything is the same except Mark Antony wears these booty shorts the whole time" or a drawing of Antony wearing THIS ENTIRE OUTFIT.

For those who want to explore more, I highly suggest the tagamemnon tag. (That's such a great tag - I smile every time.) IMHO thoodleoo has one of the best classics humor/fun facts tumblrs, and she links to most of the other great classics tumblrs so it's a great place to find another sites as well.

I don't get what's so funny about the one where the guy is trying to stay optimistic while Pompeii is destroyed by a volcano.

I like the "Odysseus is clearly bisexual" one.

Kitty Stardust, it's a reference to the song Pompeii by Bastille. Ah, the intertextuality of tumblr memes.

Related to classics shitposting: the chilliad by molly hall is not yet complete, but it's a delightful retelling of the Iliad only set in a college's fraternity and sorority scene. Honestly worth it if only for the framing device of college bro Homer recounting the tale of the Chilliad to a couple police officers.

“look, i’m just telling the story as it was told to me,” homer says.

thanks!

Plus it gives me cool mom points with the teen when they overhear me watching ones with TikTok videos.

Loving the Chilliad, thanks for linking it.

And there's nothing like classics nerd humor - this is quality stuff.

I am only up to hour three but the Chiliad is great and deserves it's own FPP when it is finished. I seem to recall that the Iliad took six hours to recite, but I have no idea if that is a false memory. Any classics scholars care to comment?

I think, and I am just armchair quarterbacking at this point, that the gods should be faculty or at least post-grads (They should know better but they don't). But making them all college students does preserve the thematic unity.

Oh, gods, the Chilliad is the perfect happy end to an otherwise kinda craptastic week. Every time I think "this is the best thing I've ever read", there's an even better joke.

I need to spend more time in classics Tumblr, apparently.
