Bingeworthy TV series

Wondering what series to binge next? Try Bingeworthy.io This listing shows the Top 100 Shows as nominated by users of Bingeworthy.IO with at least 25 ratings. 4/4 is the best you can get. This site was created by Dave Winer (of RSS fame), and built by site users. If you login (linking your Twitter account) you can vote for shows. You can also add new shows via Metacritic. Some of the title names are a bit dodgy, and there's little granularity (eg. all seasons of Dr Who are listed as one title, but Battlestar Galactica series are listed twice (1978 and 2003)). Could be useful if you think you've seen all the good shows...

You can (once logged in) rate shows from Best to Worst, and look for other site users with similar taste to your (and see their choices).

Even though I know I'm outside* the social norms when it comes to TV shows I'm interested in, it's distressing to see hard evidence of how far outside I actually am.

This is such a weird list. Some of these are 6-ish hours. Some are 50-60 (or more). I'm curious if "binge" is used nowadays to mean both "watch a bunch of this in a row but then do other things in life" and also "watch nothing but this show for a week" which I think of more as a marathon than a binge.

The Wire is #1, because Duh. I mean, you come at the king, you best not miss.

Wow Northern Exposure? I mean it had good bits but I would definitely call it uneven, especially later seasons.

Surprised to see Sports Night so high (#25). I like that show, but it does not deserve to appear ahead of Parks and Rec, The Good Place, and Archer.

Where can I stream Northern Exposure? Where??? That and Picket Fences are high on my list of “I sure wish I could watch those again” shows from the CBS Vault.

Thank goodness the entire run of Moonlighting came out on DVD.

Shows with subtitles never have a chance of making it onto this kind of list, but Babylon Berlin is astoundingly excellent television. It’s as good as The Wire. Binge that.

I miss when you could have a self-contained account on a website. A hundred different usernames and passwords is better than the tracking horror we have now.

Dr Who are listed as one title, but Battlestar Galactica series are listed twice (1978 and 2003 )

It’s because all Doctor Who seasons are explicitly a continuation of the season prior even if the actors, sets radically change, or there is a years long break between seasons. The 2003 Battlestar Galactica is a compete remake of the 1978 series and other than some Easter eggs exists completely separately from it.

Wow Northern Exposure?
Unless something changed while I wasn't looking, you can't watch a recorded version of Northern Exposure. It doesn't exist.
They didn't secure the rights to the music used in the broadcast version of the show, so DVDs and such replaced it with generic hold music.
But the music was one of the MAIN CHARACTERS on the show; imagine Hannibal without food or art, or Arrested Development where Ron Howard is replaced with canned laughter.
Might as well watch the Wachowski Speed Racer, sober, on a black&white TV.

If you’re wondering where to stream this list of shows, I recently learned about Just Watch, an app that lets you search for shows to find out where it’s streaming. You can also sort through new content on any streaming platform, look through genres, etc. It’s helped me out so much, at this point in covid and running out of content.

Along the same lines as Northern Exposure, but a little further back, WKRP in Cincinnati’s music rights ran out years back, so all the music in a topical show based on a radio station everything is Muzak.

And, anytime Northern Exposure comes up, I get wistful for Key West, which maybe was a spin-off? Or loosely connected? Similar fish out of water of a guy inheriting a house in Key West, and hazily in my mind, full of magical realism and story telling. It only ever got a single season, I think. Damn, I loved that show.

One things thats interesting about the list is how new almost all the shows are. I wonder how much is selection bias, as the participants are all twitter users, and how much is actually just that TV used to be really shit.

Of the top 100 movies:

Only 19 began airing before the year 2000
and of those, only 6 began airing before 1990 (and that includes The Simpsons, which technically started in 1989 and Mystery Science Theatre 3000 which started in 1988).

I actually think its slightly selection bias, as I think there may have been a couple more shows from the 1980s and 1990s if the crowd was a little older.

But I don't personally think that's the major factor. I really do think this list, and all the others done by real critics, point to the fact that TV is now an art form. Other people may have seen that it was in the past, and I'm betting those works are the ones that show up on these lists.

I think as well, if you do some analysis of where it aired, you'll see the obvious trends like more shows being made on HBO in the early 2000s and streaming showing up in the late 2010s, but I think its also interesting that FX has so many shows on this list. I think people dont necessarily think of FX when they think of prestige TV, but it has been for a very long time now (The Americans, Fargo, LEGION, etc.).

Ghidorah, Key West(yay!) wasn't linked, other than by formula.
A guy from New Jersey wins the lottery and moves to Key West (the remotest of the Florida Keys islands and thus the USA: highway 1, mile marker #0) to emulate writer Ernest Hemingway. Fish out of water encounters the wisdom of the local weirdos, in an uncanny faraway place.
It actually lost itself a bunch of audience, who rolled their eyes and said 'C'mon, man, this is just Fox trying to make Southern Exposure'.

I also wondered about that. I came to Firefly after watching Serenity, and I have the series on DVD but I never managed to watch all of it, let alone binge it.

Firefly deserved to be cancelled. It’s not a coincidence that no one tells you that you absolutely need to read the Dark Horse comics. It’s a good premise with bad execution (story wise, the production design is top notch).

Bartleby, I guess something in my mind had some sort of episode where the guy randomly met someone from Sicily. Such a good show, and just full of interesting stories. I mean, I guess that was a bit of the problem itself, the writers just had a bunch of fun or interesting stories they wanted to tell, and built the characters around the type of person that would tell the story. I wonder if I would still be enthralled with it like I was when I was younger.

As far as the recency bias, I wonder if the opposite isn't at play when looking at all of the reboots and such in the pipeline. Supposedly a new version of 30something is coming out, where all the kids from the original are in their 30s, and their parents (now sixty something, and yes, the original cast will return) are hanging around.

I mean, I liked 30something, even if it wasn't meant for the kid that I was, but I wonder who the hell today is calling for a new version of that mostly forgotten show? I mean, the answer is clearly the people with the money and the shot calling power that would rather bask in nostalgia than greenlight something new, weird, and possible outside of their comfort zone. I'd like to believe that if I was in that position, I'd try to okay new things, but who am I kidding, I'd be ordering new series of Starblazers, a reboot of Herman's Head, and an Afghanistan war version of Tour of Duty.

I'm so bad at binging. I really don't like to watch TV for more than two hours or so at a time and I really can only handle two episodes at a sitting. So much TV writing is so formulaic that watching a bunch in a row gets really boring for me once you start noticing how each episode hits the same beats at the same points.

I get "Book Bargain" catalogs that include DVDs of really strange old TV shows, so I have some recommendations you will not get at any website.

I bought the complete set of "The Adventures of Robin Hood", 1955-59, which is terrible in a fascinating way. Some of its writers had been blacklisted, so their take on "Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor" is daring if you really pay attention. Great theme song! May seem strangely familiar!

Then there's "Johnny Staccato", a series from 1959 that starred John Cassavetes as a private detective who hangs around Greenwich Village jazz joints and solves crimes. Elmer Bernstein composed the theme; be there or be square.

I also have "Decoy", 1957, starring Beverly Garland as an undercover cop back when women cops on TV were so exotic the show could barely contain itself in dealing out lurid situations. If you only know Beverly Garland from her terrible horror movie roles or from "My Three Sons", it's pretty interesting (but not... good).

However, the crown jewel of my collection is "Checkmate" (1960-62), about a trio of investigators who try to STOP CRIMES BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. It starred Anthony George, Sebastian Cabot, and T̶r̶o̶y̶ Doug McClure. Just watching these three actors trying to talk to each other from different acting universes is worth the price. Then there is simply Sebastian Cabot. It pays to watch him carefully, because acting like that is rare nowadays. If he goes to bed, he will pick up the alarm clock, set it, put it down, then pick it up again to check it, so you know he is serious about waking up early, and you also know something will prevent him from doing it. Every scene is like that. He can't just pick up an umbrella; he has to check it for moisture or broken ribs. The show must have been popular (?), because the list of guest stars is pretty impressive: Dana Andews, Eve Arden, John Astin, Jack Benny, Sid Caesar, Peter Lorre, etc. However, the episode featuring Charles Laughton is the one I remember most, because of the amazing scenery-chewing contest between him and Sebastian Cabot; trust me, they are evenly matched. The theme is by "Johnny Williams"; the concept by Eric Ambler. I am not saying it is good, but it is binge-worthy.

Bartleby, emjaybee, The Pluto Gangsta: I heard about this earlier, I think it's legitimate: the entirety of Northern Exposure with original music.

http://wearecult.rocks/the-complete-northern-exposure-comes-to-dvd
https://www.amazon.com/Northern-Exposure-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B079J83V4P

It's region 2, so you'll need a region-free player (or you could just...find it somewhere) but it's available.

Firefly deserved to be cancelled.

Agreed, albeit in hindsight.

I've come to think that Firefly arrived at the exact moment during the release of the Star Wars prequels where we were all hungry for something better and Firefly was close enough. Remember all those "Joss Whedon Is My Master Now" t-shirts?

Northern Exposure: nushustu, thank you for that link! I had heard the full, unadulterated version of Northern Exposure was available in Germany, but I hadn't seen that new release. Very exciting! (I THINK my player works with Region 2 ... )

As for WKRP, Shout Factory actually put out a complete WKRP set with very nearly all the original music restored. (Somebody somewhere did a spreadsheet of the music showing which songs they managed to get onto the new DVD release. It's not perfect by far, but Shout Factory clearly tried really hard.

I'm another one who doesn't do that much binge watching. I am, however, extremely glad that so much is so available so easily these days.

There's a remake of Utopia ?
Yup.
To explain: Utopia was a British tv show that ran from 2013-2014. It was brilliant, creative, disturbing, all kinds of good stuff.

This year Gillian Flynn wrote a US remake for Amazon. It has, thankfully, been canceled.

Why ?
I don't know. Probably the American desire to remake tv and movie from other countries. Or because it's a fallen world.

Best thing I have watched recently was Counterpart (Starz) starring J.K. Simmons. There are two seasons on Amazon Prime US. Really surprised me as it was pretty much a random discovery by me and I have seen zero buzz before or since. Also enjoying Giri/Haji on Netflix but I am only 2 episodes in.

Giri/Haji? Hell yes!

And I am surprised Frasier didn't make the list (or I missed it ... I'm currently binging it and s02e23, the inkeepers, is an episode where they buy a restaurant and the way disaster just keeps on building and blowing up in their faces is nothing short of amazing comedy!).

And where's Blackadder?

Or the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars?

Or Cowboy Bebop?

Or Mr Robot?

Or The IT Crowd?

Or Black Monday?

Or Gravity Falls?

Or The Expanse (maybe that one was on there ...)?

As for BSG ... I was surprised at how bad THAT was on a rewatch. It really does not hold up (the fx/action does, the story doesn't). Space: Above and Beyond is WAY better!

And finally: Firefly is still awesome. The cast chemistry alone is worth the watch and the worldbuilding is still great. And certain parts are still magical (Summer Glau and the field of flowers/gun scene!). I will admit, especially considering Whedon's track record (apart from Buffy) and Serenity/the comics, it might have turned to shit in later seasons ... but there was enough to have at least a great season 2 and 3. Season 1 is still great in terms of story, worldbuilding, banter and just that cast interacting. And that was season 1! Most great series (even Blackadder!) have a not so good first season before the cast/writers/etc gell into greater things!
