(SLTwitter) Our friends at Dog Rates have released their 2020 compilation video. Don't know about your climate, but it got really dusty in here while viewing.

Hoof why did that make me cry so much? Loved seeing the year in review through dogs.

oh man that's gonna beat out White Wine in the Sun for this year's ugly cry.

Past dusty and into full fledged weeping here - had to say goodbye to our 13 year-old Boxer the week lockdown began. Vet could't even let us in so thankfully Angel Paws agreed to come do it on our front porch, though that was when no one knew what Covid was all about so they came in full body suits and PPE - at least it was a beautiful and unseasonably warm March day so we were able to hang outdoors in the sun with him for awhile before they came. It's been beyond an utterly dreadful year to not have our pup - and he'd have been so goddam happy 'cause literally all we've done for 10 months is hang around the house, go for walks and hikes, cook good food and read/nap/watch TV-repeat.

The little baby dachshund at the beginning has the same duck toy as my little baby dachshund did

She doesn't care about toys anymore though; she's old; she's blind; she's my best baby girl; please excuse me

Dogs are so full of love. We almost don't deserve them.

Watched this with my loveydove snugged up next to me here on the sofa. Tried not to cry because it upsets him. Failed.

Hugging dogs. In tears. Wonderful.

It's a beautiful reminder that they're here with us, through everything. We don't go it alone, because they're beside us, always, and wouldn't choose anywhere else to be.

This may have been a shitty year for us humans but with all of us home so much, it's been the best dog year ever.

I want to watch this but I don't have the spoons for a weepfest today

"How many cars do you usually see out here?" cracked me up (but yes oh my god I started crying when I saw this post in my RSS reader, basically, that's how things are).

Is this “aww this is so sweet why am I crying?” kinda stuff or Legit Sads kinda stuff? Cause I love dogs and would like to watch a video of them but cannot handle the latter.

It’s the first obfuscation, dogs are really good.
posted by lepus at 3:31 PM on December 30, 2020 [2 favorites]

it’s got some 2020 recap content and some hella emotionally manipulative music, but it is otherwise 100% good dogs doing adorable and hilarious doofus dog things and/or adorable and inspiring work dog things

Thanks :)
I love all these dogs (just not quite as much as my own)

I liked the dog mad at trashcans and the dog trying to eat cars while riding in the car.

I liked the dogs.

(I like dogs.)

Dogs are my favorite people, this video is the best.
posted by LooseFilter at 4:52 PM on December 30, 2020 [2 favorites]

I bet I wouldn’t have cried if I had muted it. My tears were 99% at the song and 1% at this heavy, heavy year. The dog content was all positive.

I’m going to cry on my dogs now.

Novo Amor! Good choice for extra crying inspiration. Hecking good dogs, every one.

My sweet Pumpkin, who endured heartworm treatment at the beginning of the year, has finished strong. Comes trotting to my side as soon as she hears the keyboard. Learned to play fetch. Made a dogfriend! Barked five times to protecc this house! (She never barked when I got her.) She is entirely good.

@dog-rates is a treasure, as it seems entirely devoted to delivering goodness. I'd been putting off watching this because I knew I'd be wrecked, and I was. But then Pumpkin snorted in her sleep next to me and her paws twitched a little, and I was glad.

I am sitting here thinking about what I want from 2021 and how much grief we all experienced in 2020 and this video says more than I ever could about both.

Really, REALLY wish dog rates hadn't gone all racist on us, and I'm kinda surprised that isn't more well known.

Unless something else happened, the account changed a dog's name in a post from "Kanan" to "George" 2 years ago and someone found out.

This led to the disclosure that he often changes dogs' names to something that sounded funnier or got more traction. But of course, in a racist society white-sounding names get more traction. Less "let's change this Arab-sounding name" and more "man people just really love dogs named George."

Yeah a more conscientious person with a background in social justice might have interrogated that impulse without ever being called out but it seems worth noting that the person who runs the account was like 19 years old at the time.

Whether this constitutes "gone all racist" rather than "fucked up a couple years back and apologized" is left to the individual.

Yes, I mean, since then, the young man has come out much harder in favor of important social justice issues (including PP, but also BLM) than your average "nonpolitical" cute account has ever done, despite taking a fair amount of crap for "being political." (You can see it in this year's video, which surely cost him monetizable likes.) I know the right uses "nuance in judgment" to mean "a free pass for awful people," but surely we can do a little better in this situation than "gone all racist."

I have passed this on to friends' delight. What is even more impressive is how creator Matt Nelson put fundraising appeals for operations on sick dogs up for owners who could not afford them and every time they brought in more than enough for the procedures needed -- the excess of which the recipients consistently paid forward.

Started tearing up about 30 seconds in, which quickly turned into full on bawling for the rest of the video. I did not expect it to be so cathartic to watch. When it was done, I hugged my two dogs; River (our pandemic puppy) licked my eyes to get the tears fresh from the source, like the weirdo she is. Very good dogs, all of them.

salt lick, that's going on my page, Karl.

Whether this constitutes "gone all racist" rather than "fucked up a couple years back and apologized" is left to the individual.

Agreed though horses and dogs should not be named after people I think that says something like dog is barking at pedestrian and owner just says "quiet, Petey"
walking/selling/training dogs is made 500x worse by those who want, ask, then do not listen. that breaks my heart because half the time you basically hear Dog go YEAH, MORE WALKS.
