The !!!! Beat Volume 1 Show 2

Blowing off Elvis on one hand and breaking out James Brown by repeatedly playing a demo disc of Please, Please, Please Me on the other, Bill "Hoss" Allen had a long, long varied broadcast career. He will always be remembered for the creation of The !!!! Beat.

Just hit one at random, and there's Etta James belting out Something's Got a Hold on Me … wow!

This is incredible. I’ve seen some of these as clips here and there but never had any idea whole shows would appear some day. The Barbara Lynn performances are really amazing. Johnny Taylor doing Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day is almost better than the record. And why does Otis Redding just randomly show up as the host in episode 26? That whole episode!

I did wonder why some people lip synced while others are obviously live. Still it’s great to see some people that I’ve only heard on 45’s and cd comps.

Bill 'Hoss' Allen was an alcoholic at the time he hosted The !!!! Beat -- he's noticeably lit up in some of the episodes -- and he was too drunk to go on camera for that last show, so Otis Redding filled in for him. It's in one of the links, I believe.

I've been going through a bit of an obsessive Rickenbacker thing of late, so after watching the first two episodes I'm already drooling at the rhythm guitar player's Mapleglo 330 and his chunky, restrained playing of said instrument.

Ep 13 has Johnny Taylor doing the old Northern Soul classic "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day." Amazing.

Oh man, thanks for posting this! I loved listening to WLAC R&B late at night growing up in the 60s. Lots of fond memories of The Midnight Special, John R., Randy's Record Shack, ... had a real impact on me, musical taste-wise. I was not aware of this tv show version, though, so this is a real treat.

Seconding the odd mixture of lip-sync and live playing -- in the first show linked you get Etta James doing one of each. It's interesting to note how much (or how little) different performers are invested in pushing the illusion - holding a mic or not, for example. Watching the house band drummer and bass player in particular, they pretty clearly DGAF.
