Merlin Tuttle studies bats! You can read about his conservation efforts, or just browse his 2000+ image photo collection which encompasses 19 families, 125 genera, and 298 species from 38 countries. You can also listen to a two-part interview with him with Alie Ward on Ologies (or just read transcripts).

OMG! Mrs. Bibulus worked on her PhD in avian/bat bio, studying and co-publishing with Merlin, before moving on to work for a niche-well-known wind farm org in the long-long-ago. Her love of photography and flight-gifted life is in part due to his lifelong fascination with both.

(Much studies undertaken to document the winged animal deaths attributable to windmills—including that “feathering” windmill props does great help in mitigating collisions at night.)

Dr. Tuttle is a fine researcher and human, by her account, having further instilled a love of these amazing critters. It is so exciting to see him given a chance to tell his stories!

If you're going to study the big bug scourge of the skies, first be smart from the very beginning. Get vaccinated against at least one raby if not several rabies.

I really like these fuzzy little guys. I’m going to spend my next several lunch hours in this gallery. What a joy to have!

Gahhhhhhhhh bats are so lovely, and this set of resources is lovely, and it is so lovely to hear that this lovely-seeming human actually does lovely science and behaves towards fellow scientists in lovely ways! Hooray!

Came in to post almost verbatim what biogeo said.

For those who don't get the reference, here you go (though that strip is the culmination of a longer arc, for full effect go back to Oct 27, 1989 and then read forward - you can skip the Sunday strip, but why would you?).

Ze Frank dedicated an episode of True Facts yt to Merlin Tuttle and his bats.

As (of course) did 99 Percent Invisible [The Batman and the Bridge Builder]. It's an excellent episode and the supporting page has tons of great bat content as well!

I recognized the title instantly, and even the comment about the title. Now to read the article…
