If The Fates Allow

The Fates of the Broadway show Hadestown want to share some holiday joy with you. Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzales-Nacer and Kay Trinidad are joined by the entire cast of Hadestown in If The Fates Allow: A Hadestown Holiday Album [YouTube playlist], a mix of traditional songs and new offerings.

There's a pandemic-era online listening party you can watch [1h17m] with The Fates along with music director Liam Robinson and orchestrator Todd Sickafoose. If you like that kind of thing.

I really appreciated how much the album sounds like a sort of continuation of the show. If you listen for it, bits of the show's score are definitely suggested at times: fort example, the opening to Song of the Magi draws some inspiration from the end of Doubt Comes In (warning: the emotional pain of the story's conclusion lies behind that link).

That version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" may be my new favorite.

I've listened to "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming" twice now, and I do like the fragmentary-folk style arrangement. Verse 2 feels sort of cold-mixed, as though the vocal lines are just sort of dropped in here and there and the singers aren't really singing along to the instruments (or, functionally, don't have them in their earphones). Perhaps it's because, for that verse, they've edited out the sound of the singers' inhalations before their lines. Verse 3 feels much more together, and I like the violin work.

Agreed on "Merry Little Christmas", that one is great.

I added this to my holiday music last year. Of the non-traditional songs, I really like "Come Healing" (a Leonard Cohen cover), "Purple Snowflakes," and "The Longest Winter". Neat idea out of unfortunate circumstances.

I'm so here for André De Shields doing "Blue Christmas."
