Luvia Lazo is a Zapotec photographer whose recent work focuses on portraiture that doesn't show the faces of the subjects [timewalled New Yorker] and incorporates aspects of the historied fabric dying industry in Teotitlán del Valle.

Nice! These are excellent.

I'm never comfortable taking pictures of faces and don't like to appear in photos. I assume these two things are connected. I mostly take pictures of buildings and trees and pets.

This is probably my favorite picture of my dog.

Thanks to past girlfriend I know three phrases in Zapotec but can't actually remember which one is which. Lovely tangential story redacted. Sadly I think the New Yorker triggers enough of my ad blocker stuff that there's a whole bunh of not much.

"When time passed and she was still bereft, Lazo was instructed to wash her hands at Domingo’s grave, so that she could forget him. In defiance of the advice, she dyed them a deep indigo, wanting to see her sorrow on her body, but also to watch it fade away."

Moving. I hope that one day I am worthy of a rebel's grief.

I love that dog photo, dobbs!

(Taking photos of people who are taking photos themselves is my weird fetish. I've some great ones of the crowd around the Mona Lisa.)
