Beyond all reason is a real-time strategy game. It has been described as “an homage to Total Annihilation.” It is available for free.

For those who loved TA growing up, Planetary Annihilation was a great successor as well. I look forward to giving this a try!

My son and I played so much TA against each other when he was a kid. I'm totally up for this.

TA was my RTS game of choice growing up. I never got into any of the successors, although I kept buying them as they came out. SupCom and Planetary Annihilation are both well executed but I never got into them.

It's interesting to see that the engine behind Beyond All Reason is 'SpringRTS', which is something I had seen years and years ago looking to run TA on a modern system. It's pretty amazing to me that a project like this can live for 15+ years, just grinding away getting better.

I will give this a try, at the very least to get the me-as-a-child-strategy satisfaction of building a thousand mortar units and trampling over some easy AI. "Oh, I can fire over hills. You can't?"

Anyone know who's behind this, why it's free, and whether it's safe to download? (The FAQ didn't have these answers, unless I missed something.)

I’ve always liked wargames. My parents were pacificists and wouldn’t let me have army men, so I used bottle caps (Orange Crush vs Labatt Blue). In my teens I discovered military miniatures through Charles Grant’s The War Game. I started painting Napoleonic miniatures. I was also introduced to military board games like Panzer Leader. Back in the ‘90s, I would play TA with workmates after office hours.

I have downloaded BAR without issues.

They have an active Github, so by all appearances it is an open-source project with no strings, just a love of the genre.

Never played a lot of RTS games, as I am really bad at them. Starcraft, Starcraft 2, and Sid Meier's Antietam (maybe Gettysburg, can't remember) are about all I ever played in the genre.

But, worth a shot I guess.

Wish this ran on macOS, it looks like fun. Are there any RTS games, like Starcraft 2, that are worth trying on macOS?

why it's free

From the site:

It's alpha+!

Which means that there might be bugs and might even not be playable on your system/config. But for most people (±90%) it runs well. Ask around on Discord if you run into problems.
