Community will be returning on Peacock, following up its much-loved (if low-rated) run by completing the cycle: six seasons and now, a movie, as was prophesied. Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong are all set to return, with Dan Harmon (Rick & Morty) back to write.

Also, I fear that Donald Glover has gotten too big, alas! Good for him, sad for me.

Bummer about Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover.
NOT a bummer about Chevy Chase.

What I'd like to see, somewhere in the background, is John Oliver kicking the crap out of Chevy Chase. In the movie, not for real, nono.

There are many ways this could be awful, but Harmon has been consistently confident about his ideas for the movie, so I trust that there's a story worth telling there. It will be good to see these characters again, even if some are missing.

I am cautiously optimistic, but tempering expectations for it to just be a fun get together with old friends. Not that I doubt the talent of the writers etc, just that I think if I let my expectations run wild no one could meet them. This way I can be pleasantly surprised if it is more than just fun.

I've read bits and bobs here and there since about halfway through the Rick & Morty run that Harmon is in a really good place right now. It seems he is surrounding himself with good people from diverse perspectives, and thinking a lot about what it means to be a good person and it's helping him do some great work. I'm cautiously optimistic.

About time to re-watch the series I guess.

Troy and Abed are a bonded pair. A terrible shame not to have them together in the movie. I seem to remember there was a plotline where Troy had to sail around the world as one of Peirce's beyond-the-grave dickmoves.

That may have been the season without Harmon. I stopped watching it in the middle of an episode. Just hit pause and thought - why am I watching this? It sucks now.

I believe that was the arc that provided Glover his desired exit from the show. I think there was a call back in a later season in a news flash about him and Levar Burton getting shipwrecked somewhere.

I mean, we all miss Troy as a character, but in the category of Ensemble Actors Leaving a Show Because They Think They Can Do More, Donald Glover is way, way, way on the They Sure Were Right! end.

They could do worse than to get Keith David and Paget Brewster in for some scenes; maaaaybe Jonathan Banks. Heck, maybe everyone who had a recurring role on the show, except Chase.

Alison Brie's role in Mad Men completely overlaps her time in Community. John Oliver never stopped working at The Daily Show. Ken Cheong did those hangover movies. Well done for Donald developing his career, but it's not an either/or. Por que no los dos?

Alison Brie didn't write and produce Mad Men, though. Neither did she drop multiple hit records in her time off.

Donald also did a Star Wars film, wrote and produced Guava Island and wrote and produced Mr. & Mrs. Smith for tv. So it's a little more than coordinating two acting gigs.

On the pandemic table read they did, Glover seemed more positive about returning for the movie, so maybe it's a case of "they're still negotiating, and Glover has higher standards than he did so the script better be good and the shoot better be less gruelling".

I'm happy about this as long as Jim Rash is on board. And they put him in a LOT of costumes

To tag what DirtyOldTown said above, Harmon delivered what I think was the only legitimate and heart-felt apology of the me-too moment. When I heard that on his podcast I thought “well I think he’s gonna be ok” and it turns out he is, after a lot of hard work.

A freeze-frame gag in Season 6 implied that Jonathan Banks’s character died offscreen. Then again, so did Star-Burns, and he got better…

I hope this is better than I think it will be. Their most recent season wasn't super great. feel like they kind of wasted Paget Brewster.

in fact I don't know if the yahoo season was really an improvement on the gas leak season.

Troy and Abed were the heart of that show, and it wasn't worth watching without them together. I was cautiously excited about a movie, but without Troy there is no point, for me.

If they can't get Donald Glover, maybe they can get Ben Schwartz? I'd be up for Jean-Ralphio coming to Greendale, much like I'm up for Jean-Ralphio randomly crashing every show on television.

without Troy there is no point, for me.

I'm trying not to be a spoilsport, but I feel the same way. The show felt pretty aimless after Glover departed. It remained fun, but the one I remember really hooking me had Troy and Shirley in it. However, all I really know about this project right now is that it exists, so I don't want to get sour about something that hasn't even been made yet. Hope the trailer is funny, and that the full cast has yet to be announced.

I think this would be controversial, but on contemplation I'd be more likely to watch the film if they re-cast Troy than if he wasn't in it at all. Of course that's a higher risk strategy.

Aw. Dag.

Still stoked about the project, but I want Troy n Abed in this mooooooovie!
posted by ishmael at 8:26 AM on October 1, 2022 [3 favorites]

It would be a good gag if they have Glover for one early scene, then keep swapping in other actors to play Troy.

Abed would either be the only one who notices, or the only one who doesn't notice. Whichever is funnier.

I loved Community, but the last season was so meh for me that I don't actually remember if I saw the whole thing.
Sort of how I don't remember which Game of Thrones book I abandoned halfway through.

More Darkest timeline? Inspector Spacetime American reboot crossover where they travel to Cougarton Abbey? Scrubs reunion via the Cougar Town cross over? So many possibilities.

I get the sense that Donald Glover sees a lot of the things he did as part of his meteoric rise to the top as either compromises or stopgaps where he learned aspects of the industry en route to doing other things. He often comes off as fairly dismissive of things in his past, or at least uninterested in them. Which is fair, since he's clearly an ambitious guy who wants to put his fingers in a lot of pies (though I'm not entirely hero-worshipful of him). Community lost a lot when he left, though—I doubt I could watch a movie if he wasn't in it.

This is the kind of reunion that would have excited me quite a lot a few years ago, but excites me somewhat less now. Will definitely follow up, though.

Peacock? Does anyone have Peacock?

We have Peacock, and watch it fairly regularly. Some of the originals are definitely worth watching, especially Girls5Eva, which is hysterical, and The Resort was really good. But mostly it's the massive library of content (from which we choose to watch Columbo most of the time, but still, every time I go to cancel it, it seems like there's something on there we're currently watching).

Peacock comes free with Xfinity/Comcast cable, it might on other providers, too. It's a convenient way to watch some stuff without waiting for reruns.

Peacock, or at least the Peacock I pay for, runs ads during all of their streams. I really hope this movie pushes commericals from Kolb Family’s Family-packed Ham Packs.
