Takeoff, one-third of the hyped and influential rap trio Migos, died in Houston last night. He was 28.

Kirshnik Khari Ball was born in Lawrenceville, GA, and died at 810 Billiards and Bowling from a gunshot wound 1 November 2022. His contributions to rap are currently being assessed by the masses:

Can we stop this passive language? He didn't die, he was murdered. At the tragically young age of 28.

I have no beef in this, I don't follow rap, but this framing is infuriating. Murder. It's a thing. It happened here.

Reminiscent of the language used to minimize death by automobile. It’s not vehicular manslaughter, it’s just an accident.

One of my favorite Migos moments was when they performed with a live orchestra. This is so tragic.

To hippybear's point, there's video and photos of the murder on social media, which I encountered without searching for it. I feel terrible for Quavo, who had to watch his cousin (Takeoff) needlessly die.

RIP. Completely senseless and tragic. Too many young men dying like this, for nothing. I hate that life feels so cheap here sometimes.

The man was shot right in the middle of Houston's downtown entertainment district. He was hanging out at a franchise of a bar-and-bowling chain! It is hard to over-emphasize how low-key and family friendly the area is. It's a shopping mall by day and some very mild nightlife after hours.

It's horrible to see trap musicians keeping it this "real." A man made rich by great talent and good fortune, gunned down in a pleasant entertainment district, and for what?

I want this country to be better and it keeps on defying me

Migos's Tiny Desk Concert made me a fan. Really upset by this...

Shootings in the rap scene are far too common. Because she has a new album out music sites seem to have big photos/headlines about Offset and Taylor Swift right now, which highlights the disparity. It would be totally insane if Swift was shot, but if you read Pitchfork, you will see news about a murder or shooting in the hip-hop world once a week. It’s terrible.

As an old music guy who's been through 50 years of music trends but didn't know Takeoff, I was pretty disappointed to listen to some tracks and read some lyrics and find that even though the beats were good, content-wise it comes off as just Extruded Rap Product. Misogyny, toxic masculinity, alpha male vibes, rolling around in late-stage capitalism. It feels like the kind of stuff Metafilter would turn its nose up at if it was coming from Donald Trump or Harvey Weinstein or a defense contractor or Proud Boy or the NRA, which it totally does every day.

Nevertheless

Absolutely not.
I’m guessing you also didn’t know the impact Takeoff had. His style really changed the game not only for the Migos (he’s credited with creating their specific sound) but also countless other artists. You may not be about to hear the nuance. We can. It’s disappointing to see someone’s talent dismissed pretty quickly based on a fast internet search.

Honestly just let some of us grieve.

Also comparing him to Trump, Weinstein, Proud Boy or the NRA? Really?? That’s pretty poor taste, the guy didn’t do anything wrong.

I never actively followed Migos, but I saw them when they were a surprise last-minute addition to Boston Calling a few years ago. They were very good, and I was struck by how charismatic Takeoff was even though he was less showy than his bandmates. RIP.

My partner and I were out for our daily lunch walk yesterday (Long Beach, CA) and we heard the ubiquitous triplet flow wafting out of a passing car's sound system. I remarked how amazing it was that this particular flow style has remained so pervasive - if not dominant - in an art form which is known for innovating so relentlessly. It's a testament to Migos and Takeoff, and the astonishingly long arm of the style they popularized. Godspeed, sir.

Not to be pedantic, but "was murdered" is passive language, not much different from "mistakes were made."

Saying he died is not passive language, and it's the most correct way to describe the outcome. Police are still searching for suspects. Nobody has been charged with any crime, much less with murder.

His record label said it was a stray bullet

In the video that’s been released he’s off to one side as Quavo (one of the other Migos) argues with a man who is only visible from behind while everybody’s crew stands around. Then the crowd scatters and the cameraperson ducks as shots are heard. So no, it doesn’t really look like he was a deliberate target. But the whole thing seems very tragically petty.

Apologies for my earlier post. There's a history of dive-bombing obit posts to point out some perceived flaw with the person ("too bad he/she was associated with [some failing]") but that doesn't mean it's good behavior or that I should do it. Also I should have thought about that fact that the OP wouldn't post it without being a fan who was heartbroken over Takeoff's death. I think in my head I was pointing out Metafilter hypocrisy but that was a stupid time and place for it and a bad look.
