I just started reading "The BBC: A Century On Air" by David Hendy, and he notes the contributions of Manchester 2ZY, as well. On this side of the pond, station KDKA in Pittsburgh featured the results of the 1920 Presidential election on its initial broadcast on November 2, 1920.

I think the term “broadcast” (in the sense of a widespread electronic transmission as opposed to the agricultural sense) was first used in 1921, so it must have been almost avant-garde to use the term in the BBC’s name a year later.
