The link for "How to make your drive fun" is trying to get me to download some bogus "update to your PC" -- just a heads up for folks that the site may not be safe.

Ah, sorry about that. I'm running an ad blocker so don't see it.

"How far can you go by train in Europe in 5 hours?"

Oh, I see. You want to ruin my evening.

How many countries in Europe can you get to in 24 hours?

No planes, taxis or hitchhiking & leave every country in a different vehicle than you came in on.

The first time I tried "How to make your drive fun," it did something I haven't been able to replicate. It charted the route from Chicago to LA, but all the sights along the way were taken from France and Spain. Who could miss the ruins of the medieval Château de Fausseflammes in [checks map] Plainfield, Illinois?

Mods, the "How to make your drive fun" link seems to be a bust, please remove.

Nice! I've seen these called isochronal maps, though "time travel" is also sorta applicable in a wordplay way thats also maximally confusing.

"How far can you go by train in Europe in 5 hours?"

I love these types of things - it's interesting to see the effects of high speed trains, and that of the Alps. As it happens, I spent yesterday travelling from Venice to Frankfurt (mostly) by train. (Only mostly because I briefly ended up on a rail replacement bus as the result of a "removal of the remnants of war" taking place near Vicenza.) It should be an 11-12 hour train journey, depending on connections and which route you take.

I'm going to have to investigate some of the "dots" at the edge of the 5 hour limit for me here in Frankfurt.

“Heaven preserve me! But I would wager four thousand pounds that such a journey, made under these conditions, is impossible.”
“Quite possible, on the contrary,” returned Mr. Fogg.
“Well, make it, then!”
“The journey round the world in eighty days?”
“Yes.”

On a firefox desktop browser, it's buggy but it works (as long as you stick to places Google Maps has walk/bike data for). Some places, you can just tell it where you want to go and it's like "ok, sure!" Sometimes not. For instance, you put in Honolulu and it takes you somewhere else in the world entirely. But! Then you can just navigate to Honolulu and there's your radius. Fiddle with setting and then it tells you it isn't working. Move the map marker just slightly and set it down again. Voila! New radius. Repeat as needed.
