“My dad got the gold.”

That gold theft, like the recent gold theft, involved a Brink’s truck, an airplane, cargo handlers, and smooth crooks who could vanish unseen. Both jobs would need inside help.

Adrian Humphreys, a crime reporter for The National Post looks back at a 1952 airport heist where 14 gold bars worth $233,499 (about $2.6 million today) vanished. His reporting was sparked by a similar heist earlier this year

Bonus: the CBC looks back at a 1966 gold heist, which was the largest in Canadian History

I'd like to remind everybody of the great maple syrup heist, which astonishingly had a value of 18M$!

Weird - when I copy and past the first link out into a browser window (or right click to open in a new tab), it works - but if I click through from the post, it throws a 403 error.

Sorry. I have no idea why or how that's happening.

If you type "Howard Halpenny" into Google, it should take you to the National Post link. (It's also on the Post's front page today.) Another related link also appears from that search.

I'll flag the problem for the mods to look at.

When I cut and pasted the link (which Apple’s iPad really really doesn’t want you to do, apparently) it worked. Paywall. The other link to the front page? Also had to cut and paste that one. Probably also paywalled—didn’t check.

There is no way the link to the front page of the newspaper SHOULD be paywalled (not, I'm not saying it's not). I just mean it's the main page/landing page/home page, and you'd think they'd want people to link to it. But who knows how media executives think these days.

Det.-Sgt. Dunmall paid a visit to Backlin's law practice, casually pacing the office as they spoke, his son said.

"He noticed a briefcase sitting beside Mr. Backlin's desk and he kind of just pushed it with his foot and immediately noticed it was extremely heavy," Larry Dunmall said.

"He opened it and inside was a large section of a gold bar. And at that moment the world changed."

But wait. There's more...

The other gold was recovered from Backlin's house, some in his basement deep freeze, under slabs of moose meat, some outside, under snow.

Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, eh?

I was able to get past the 403 error just by clicking in the address bar and hitting Enter.
