Haywood’s ideas have seen him characterized as an extremist even by others on the far right including the former American Conservative columnist Rod Dreher, who wrote last December that Haywood was “seriously, batshit crazy” and characterized him as writing from a “Midwestern Führerbunker”.

Yikes. If Dreher of all people is calling you batshit crazy, that should be a wakeup call.

I read this a bit ago, and have not re-read it immediately before making this comment, so maybe it's a tad inaccurate.

But it seems to be that this guy really wants to be in a D&D LARP group, but doesn't really know exactly how to go about finding the right group of people.

I mean, he's found people do to LARPing with, but unfortunately they aren't actually playing the adventure they want now. They want to play the REAL adventure with REAL death and REAL guns. But this group needs to find a talented DM who can help them realize that this story is best played out in a fantasy, storytelling space, and that they can achieve great things and have a lot of buckling of the swash.

This supposed "warlord" status is fantasy. It's not a role he's playing today, it's a role he wants to think he will someday come to inhabit when the world ends.

Seriously, needs to get some dice of various sorts and a rule book.

My “favorite” thing about this story is “According to tax records Haywood has funded SACR through his Howdy Doody Good Times foundation.”
posted by Horace Rumpole at 4:57 PM on August 31, 2023 [16 favorites]

Let's break this down:

The site claims SACR is “raising accountable leaders to help build thriving communities of free citizens”

This means, "I don't like paying taxes but I do like getting government subsidies."

who will rebuild “the frontier-conquering spirit of America”.

This means, "I liked it when white Christians genocided non-white, non-Christian native Americans."

It condemns “those who rule today”

Tricky. This could mean "Democrats" but it probably means "Jews" but it definitely means both.

saying that they “corrupt the sinews of America”

This means feminism, LGBT folks, and anyone with a college degree who isn't in The Federalist Society.

“[alienate] men from family, community, and God”

This means anyone to the left of Ronald Thatcher-Rand, the main character in his fanfic Turner Diaries sequel, who is both an incel and physically disciplines his harem of it's-legal-in-Sealand brides.

and promising to “counter and conquer this poison”.

This means everyone, eventually: fascism is a death cult that continues to find more and more "impure" people to butcher until no one is left.

Is archive.ph phishcaptching? I cannot get past its capchas and I'm definitely not a bot. Is its owner reusing my captcha choices to hack other sites? (serious question)

These dudes should really pay attention to what happened to Yevgeniy Prigozhin, an actual private warlord.

Well, they're planning on being warlords after all the governments are gone. They are planning for the Putins to be dead before they claim power.

Real warlords have tigers.

who will rebuild “the frontier-conquering spirit of America

you have to ask yourself, why would a re-building spirit want to conquer something that no longer exists and and still call it America.

Thanks, clavdivs, I'm absolutely swiping "real warlords have tigers" for some as-yet-undefined purpose.

We need to ask Ukraine to designate one of their ruined towns to be the last town that will be rebuilt, and build a small prison camp in the middle of it.

Then we can sentence all these warlord wannabes, as soon as they are convicted of a civil-war-adjacent crime, to walk through the town and spend part of their prison sentence in that camp.

Every man, at some point, imagines himself as a warlord.

The problem is, not enough men imagine themselves as decomposing bodies rotting anonymously in an irrigation ditch.

The article is in the Guardian. It's not paywalled at all. There might be a nag screen but you can dismiss that. I don't know why a paywall link was even included for this post.

I appreciate it, because I don't want to give the aggressively transphobic rag any clicks or ad impressions.

I mean, he's found people do to LARPing with, but unfortunately they aren't actually playing the adventure they want now.

In their imagination, they're leading medieval knights in shining armor, or at least heroic military types with manly looks and all the right tactical gear. Then they have to face the crushing disappointment of reality, where their followers are all dirty, embarrassing Duck Dynasty types.

archive.is doesn't play well with Cloudflare's DNS, so if you're having trouble accessing it you may want to check if that's the issue.

Howdy Doody Good Times foundation

I don't know exactly how to describe this, but there's a sort of malevolent jester quality to a lot of the far-right stuff I've observed. To me it seems like it's from the same part of the lizard brain that says "I was only kidding" when getting called out for something particularly bad. They're the people who like to argue for arguments' sake and then when someone gets offended or hurt, they respond by saying their victim can't take a joke. These group names just formalize that part of the schoolyard bullying.

See also, Super Happy Fun America, who organized the Straight Pride Parade in Boston among other nefarious gatherings, and the whole Boogaloo and Proud Boys movements, to an extent. Those last two have been widely recognized as more serious (and seriously bad) than others, but they started with a bunch of over-the-top frat-boy type of humor as the basis (Proud Boys named after a song from the Aladdin stage musical and part of the initiation was calling out names of children's breakfast cereals while getting beaten by other members, if I remember right; it's sort of like if Johnny Knoxville and crew tried to have a politics behind their mayhem).

> malevolent jester quality

my new hobby this week was going to be reporting "kill yourself" gifs to the abuse department of tenor.com, who is owned by google. i had sent a handful of emails before i realized that the vast vast majority of them are correlated under the site tag #KYS and even just straight #KillYourself so i just ended up emailing them a link to their own damn site tag search, along with the highlighted section of their own abuse policies.

anyway, my point: nearly every single one of them is some sort of smiling or inviting or cartoony gleeful image, so this is a deep thing that runs deep

Is archive.ph phishcaptching? I cannot get past its capchas and I'm definitely not a bot.

This had been a problem with archive.is for a few weeks now. I feel we should avoid links to it as much as possible.

.......
archive.is doesn't play well with Cloudflare's DNS, so if you're having trouble accessing it you may want to check if that's the issue.

Changing your DNS settings away from the provider of DNS for 20% of the internet, just to possibly access a sketchy website, seems a little backward. Maybe we should stop linking to archive.is until they fix whatever is broken on their end.

(archive.is refuses to allow Cloudflare DNS to resolve their domain because they can’t precisely geolocate you, due to privacy features implemented by Cloudflare, and they claim this prevents them from operating the site cost-effectively. I have not assessed those claims, but duly noted so there’s no confusion: this isn’t a bug, it’s a choice.)

(sorry to continue the derail but: i'm using 9.9.9.9, a service of quad9.net, focused on privacy and security and i'm also getting the captcha loops. i found an article on community.cloudflare.com from May 2022 saying it had started working again at that time.

again, sorry for the derail but maybe someone should pull together a post about this, either for MeFi or MeTa cuz this is becomming a bigger derail almost every time someone links it in a FPP. here's a seed: )
