As someone who has directly observed the music in retirement homes change from Glen Miller to Mick Jagger, I'm anxiously awaiting the first good colonoscopy rap.

It wouldn't hurt to mention the subject of the post, since the mobile site doesn't show tags. (It's an article about Andre 3000 of Outkast.)

I'm into it. I got into Japanese ambient when the Youtube algorithm went nuts for it a few years ago, and this sample sounds similar.

This is a really good piece, but I wanted to add a footnote to this statement: “This year, the duo’s fifth album, 2003’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, was certified platinum for the 13th time, making it the best-selling rap album in history.”

Because the Recording Industry Association of America, the organization that doles out platinum certifications, counts by number of discs per album. So a double album like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below gets twice the number of platinum discs per sale than regular albums. It’s up there, though. Unless I missed someone on this list, it’s the eighth bestselling hip hop album of all time in the US, behind only Notorious B.I.G, Lauryn Hill, Nelly, MC Hammer, the Beastie Boys and a couple of Eminem albums.

I don't know. Technically he blew the wind, not vice versa.

Nice read, and glad André 3000 is enjoying life and making music he likes. I'll definitely check this album out.

It brings me no joy to observe that you missed the person with the third-best-selling rap album (in the US) of all time, Kid Rock.

I need someone to identify those amazing flutes.

The big one he plays sideways (similar to a regular flute) appears to be a "contrabass" wooden flute, possibly made by Pat Haran. The other he plays facing forward seem to be Mayan double and triple flutes similar to the ones in this video.

In the photos of the gq interview, Andre is playing a handmade Mayan drone flute from Quetzalcoatl Music, which seems to be a one man shop. They seem really cheap for what they are; classical (metal) flutes are much more expensive

oh no now I must sign up yet again for a session with Lacuna to erase from my mind all memories of Kid Rock

There’s still time for Kid Rock to start playing wind instruments in laundromats in a new Kenny G phase of his career like Andre 3000.

Extra points for using the word "literally" correctly.

OK, let's do this and roll out the pedantry: 'literally' has also meant 'figuratively' in American English for almost two centuries at least. So can we stop with this forever? (OED citation credits Mark Twain with first published usage.) 'Literally' means both what it literally means and its opposite, what it figuratively means. We do this in American English all the time, use a word as its opposite meaning (flammable and inflammable mean the same thing, for instance).
Literally: 2 : in effect : virtually—used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement or description that is not literally true or possible

Literally: in effect; in substance; very nearly; virtually: I literally died when she walked out on stage in that costume.

Literally: used to emphasize what you are saying: He missed that kick literally by miles.
So please, folks, no more "correcting" use of the word 'literally,' it literally also means figuratively. I know this is frustrating to some, that words can mean their opposite, but *shrug* that's English for you.

Also, looking forward to listening to this new Andre 3000 album over the weekend, he's a consistently interesting and engaging musician.

The loops and layered soundscape behind the flute lines remind me a lot of Brian Eno's ambient records.

There’s a 3LP 180g release (if that site seems sketch, I would note that Andre 3000 is signed to Epic Records and that places like Turntable Lab and Rough Trade also have preorders), if you’re into that kind of thing.

The credits are kinda nuts—Carlos Niño co-produced it; Matthewdavid, Mia Doi Todd, Nate Mercereau, and Surya Botofasina all feature prominently. I would not have thought that Andre 3000 would want to make an International Anthem kind of album, but I guess he did.

It’s been interesting to see fan reviews.

Worth noting that the FPP’s quote is the name of the title track. Mwah! The rest of the titles are also highly evocative, as befits an instrumental album. What a flex! What fun!

Soundwise it is a drowsy soundscape from the first age of headphones and is very good at being that.

Yeah, it doesn't sound so much like a "flute album" as it does an "early 90s chillout album heavily referencing mid-70s chillout albums." Very nice, with some gorgeous sections I'm sure I'd love at 6am coming down from something, but not really much of a musical revelation. Great that he went in the direction he wanted, though.

Rap isn't really my favourite in music, but I really like minimalist/ experimental stuff - and this sounds great.

Damn that last track is such sweet and beautiful ambient music (the swelling climax after 13' kind of spoils the mood, but ok), even while not coming down at 6am. Reminds me of some of the gorgeous Japanese 80s stuff on this playlist.

I keep defaulting to this record as my daily background listening and keep finding wonderfully compelling moments that draw me in. The Gandhi/Dalai Lama/Jesus track is another current fave - reminds me of the quieter moments on Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda."

I'm listening to it for the first time right now, and I'm about 8 minutes in, and I'm like "this is good ambient wallpaper music" and then I do a doubletake when I remember it's Andre 3000. Reminds me kinda like a doubletake I did when hearing Lil Yachty's Let's Start here. Not expecting it but liking it a lot.
