Koalas sighted in areas where they were thought to have been wiped out

Koalas were assumed wiped out from north-west Sydney by this fire but sightings are rewriting the story. Devastating bushfires left koalas no chance of survival in 2002 but confirmed koala spottings in the area are signalling a population bouncing back.

From somewhere I remember a video that zookeepers had to physically “couple” mating koalas, and comically rub them back and forth, one mounted to the back of the other, until “completion,” to get Koalas to procreate. Are these cute creatures just too perma-stoned on euc for the good of their species? Is this just anti-drop bear propaganda?

Always great news that they’re making it work well on their own!!!

p.s. in graduate school I opined the possibilities of a koala breakout from the San Diego zoo. Southern California is flush with imported eucalyptus, though idk if it’s of the right type and diversity for koalas. Could an enclave expand in the diaspora?

I also wished someone would start endangered species pet programs. With the <1>every ecosystem-how great would it be if we had genetic diversity sustaining pet programs!? But that might also just be wishful thinking to have a red panda (my SO’s desire was a koala, which incidentally are purported to be very grumpy guys/gals when not stoned through the detoxification-of-eucalyptus program).

The eucalyptus trees may actually be more intelligent than the famously-smooth-brained koalas that live in them!

It's always so heartening when there is unexpectedly fast recovery after a major disruption, like this after fires or how sometimes when a dam is removed aquatic species will move back in rapidly.
