Educate. Prevent. Practice Safer Sex. Insist On Needle Exchange Programs. End HIV/AIDS Discrimination. Demand Adequate Treatment for Low Income HIV+ Persons. (And fight like hell against those who drag their feet on public health issues for the sake of ideology.)

Educate. Prevent. Practice Safer Sex.

This is why the struggle against AIDS is doomed to fail.

HIV, like a computer virus, spreads mainly through poor social engineering (ie, the relative powerlessness of women, lack of public discourse on sexual topics, religous inflexibility, etc).

Correcting these problems will entail the education of the people, and there is nothing more dangerous to a repressive society than an educated populace. Therefore, one can expect that the forces that control society, political, relgious and financial, will do everything they can to avoid taking the steps necessary to thwart the spread of this disease.

I was very glad to read of the report that concluded Australia's Needle Exchange Prevented 25000 HIV Infections as it presents the clear financial benefits of something which should be a no-brainer good idea but is often disrupted by nimbyism.
