Eric gets his own thread. Now I've seen everything. Do you think we can keep THIS on topic?

If you're going to use MetaFilter as a battleground in a personal dispute, at least have the decency to provide some context. I'm not willing to fish through either of your sites at random to find the origin of your blood feud.

So the guy vents on his personal site. Would you care to explain what the purpose was in dragging your little feud in here?

there is no feud or personal dispute - that's what's so screwy about it.... the posting is about people who attack others on the web as a way to gain attention and I'm just pointing it out

"the posting is about people who attack others on the web as a way to gain attention and I'm just pointing it out"

And a good job you made of it. Matt, pls delete thread.

So your posting of this link on the front page of MeFi is NOT an attack on another as a means of gaining attention? If you're trying to make a point, make it. Don't just link to something with a snide remark and assume we'll all know what you're talking about.

You know, as amazing as it may sound (at least until you get to know me and realize I'm a bit of an arrogant son of a bitch myself) I really like Eric. I like his fuck all'yall attitude, even though I know from personal experience that he's actually got a big heart and a lot of brainpower.

I don't know jenett that well. Went to his page, could say snarky things about it, but I won't. But let me say this:
You are a no-good son of a bitch dragging this half-assed bullshit on display, son, and you know it. If Eric did this shit to you, you'd be the first to hop up and bitch about it.

I know your kind.

Now, am I getting vituperative and personal? You bet your ass. Eric has been nothing but kind and supportive to me from day one, and he's one of the people I will now run to back up no matter what it costs me. Eric's good people. He doesn't deserve this kind of crap.

I agree that Eric is good people.

My first meeting with him on the net pissed me off so much that I went out of may way to give him the shaft. But then we talked things out, and after I got to know him better I realized I sort of liked the guy.

I don't find most of his stuff funny. If fact I think a lot of it is petty and uncalled for. But he's a lot more than that. And you know it. We are not the sum total of our posts on a weblog.

I think most everyone here knows about Eric and would want nothing more than to see this thread go away. jenett - you like throwing gas on the fire or something? What the hell?

Either get to know him or ignore him. That's my advice.

Thanks for defending me guys...

(Note #4 on the list) :0)

I would have preferred "The Lenny Bruce or Howard Stern of the web", but Don Rickles is pretty cool too....

"the posting is about people who attack others on the web as a way to gain attention and I'm just pointing it out"

Yeah. Pretty childish, huh?

What's with jumping all over someone for a post?

Comments like these (even if they are somewhat justified) make other MeFi posters feel a bit apprehensive about sharing a link. Fear of getting flamed will do that to you.

And while I can't say I've gotten to know Eric very well, I can say that I've found Jenett to be most helpful - he puts a great deal of time and effort into promoting independent content on the web.

So it was a dumb post - I've submitted a few questionable links myself, and I'll likely do it again.

I suppose I'd best prepare to get chewed out . . .

y'all miss the point big time... I agree - delete the thread, Matt

I just love how it is always wrong when someone else does it but it's different when you do it. Whatever "IT" is.

I mean when I've done it I felt justified and everyone reamed me a new one anyway. But here it's different, right? Well, Jenett doesn't think so, but I'm sure under different circumstances Jenett would so something like this. Maybe if I had time and could dig through MeFi's archives I'd find a situation where Jenett made the equiv. of a personal attack or something. Put up a little dirty laundry in here. Maybe I'd never find anything.

We're all human. Certain people want MeFi to be very particular and serious all the time. Others want it to be more open and personal. Matt wants the place to be self-policing but he wants to keep the guidelines relatively vague cuz otherwise it takes all the fun out of it.

I'm tempted to dig into my savings and send what I can afford to Matt. See if I can get some others in here to do the same. Maybe we could accumulatively start a fund where a THIRD Meta forum can be made. MetaFallout.com maybe. Or MetaBlacklist.com. Set up Metafilter where people can vote to have threads they don't like dropped, and if ten or more registered MeFi members vote to blacklist a thread, it gets moved to the third forum.

That way MetaFilter would remain true to its namesake, and it would be self-policing, and those of us who like a more liberal approach to MeFi would still have MetaBlacklist to fall back on.

I'd be willing to pay for that, if it was reasonable. If enough people waved a couple twenty dollar bills at Matt and asked REAL nicely, maybe..?

How to get hits: piss off Joe Jenett.

Got it; thanks, Eric. :-)

Hey; waitaminnit. Has anyone ever seen these two guys in the same room together? >:-)

Maybe I'm weird, but I just can't imagine paying to talk with people in a casual environment like this. Don't you have friends? Do you charge them too? The Well? Come on and get off your pretentious high-horse. Come wade in the filth with the masses. It builds character. Maybe after a while you'll realize that petty ego conflicts are the things that make life interesting. I didn't come here for an incestuous brown-nose-a-thon. Maybe all those so-called popular web-log types get off on that blog nicely BS and get a stiffy from checking their daily site statistics.

Either way, people need to take life less seriously. Anything you type on the web is not going to be liked by someone. Either logoff or chime in.

ZachsMind, looks like this will do pretty much what you suggest but at a personal level - and no one had to wave any money.
posted by Markb at 9:07 AM on June 28, 2000

Will the weblog 'community' EVER grow up? Why take things so damn seriously? Life is too short. If someone wants to make a prick of themselves, just ignore 'em.

I stopped visiting Metafilter for a few days after losing my temper at someone's post. I just came back and found this thread. Sigh. For whatever it's worth, I know Joe and I know Eric and they are both good peeps. It's too bad these sorts of things flare up every once in a while, like persistent hemorrhoids.
posted by Zeldman at 11:55 PM on June 29, 2000

I may wave money anyway if I like it. Matt should get some kinda support for all this effort. I'd think of it kinda like giving to PBS radio now and then because I mean I listen to it. I should support it. I should put my money where my mouth is now and then.

I'll wait until Matt's done though. It might suck.

I'd like to see it more of a community thing. Where if a number of people like one person's posts over another, those posts float to the top. Each member votes for each post once, as they read them, IF they choose to participate. If you don't vote for a given post, it's given a neutral vote and stays where it is.

If it's on a personal level, that means if I don't personally like someone's posts, I can opt to 'ignore' that individual's words from then on, essentially. Not the same thing. And someone may be a jerk this week but actually have something noteworthy to say next week. However if he's consistently a butt, general consensus over a period of time would be a better tool of measurement.

At any rate to get back to this topic and try to veer back from the topic drift, attacking an individual directly should be frowned upon. Attack his issues and opinions and what he expresses, but not the person. Granted, sometimes that's a very fine grey line.

You wanna know what really sucks? An ASSHOLE like Eric Brooks can flame an upstanding asset to the personal website community like Joe Jennett, who never, not once, provoked him in word or deed, and you people make Joe the VILLAIN? Have any of you reprimanded the ASSHOLE for the malicious sour-grapes venting he did about Joe, all because he couldn't force his ugly site into i2k? It doesn't matter that he vented on his own pathetic website or in personal email attacks to Joe. You wanna defend the ASSHOLE's right to freedom of speech? Then shut up about Joe's post.

Unlike diplomatic Joe Jennett, I don't have a problem telling a sh*thead to go f*ck himself. So you all go f*ck yourselves, why don'tcha? Pathetic gaggle of misplaced loyalties - GET A CLUE! (Well, except you, aladfar).

Diplomatic Joe Jennet????

Who's making a fool of himself again by posting my emails from last year on a public website???

Wonder what a lawyer would think of that???

Joe Jenett is making HIMSELF a villan by this unprofessional conduct, and you ain't helping.

Your thoughts an opinions on the matter are more than welcome on your site... but calling me a "stalker" and posting private emails??? You're going a little too far here....

This is the kind of crap Coolstop encourages... I'm glad I'm not in it.

Sorry Matt. Really didn't want to drag MetaFilter into this, but this jerk is REALLY pushing me to escalate this.
