Me crush Arial.

A typographer writes:

Arial was actually designed especially for modern computer typesetting (DeeTeePee if you like). The original Helvetica was not.

A typeface overused/used badly is not in itself a bad typeface.

Before Arial, Helvetica was done to death by bad/unsympathetic/over-use (as was Times in the serif camp).

The design of the typeface is owned by Agfa-Monotype *not* Microsoft.

From the foundry themselves:
'Contemporary sans serif design, Arial contains more humanist characteristics than many of its predecessors and as such is more in tune with the mood of the last decades of the twentieth century. The overall treatment of curves is softer and fuller than in most industrial style sans serif faces. Terminal strokes are cut on the diagonal which helps to give the face a less mechanical appearance. Arial is an extremely versatile family of typefaces which can be used with equal success for text setting in reports, presentations, magazines etc, and for display use in newspapers, advertising and promotions.'

[Feeling smug cuz my I just found out that my mags have been nominated for 2 design & print awards ;-)]

So where can I go to lay the smackdown on Times New Roman with Palatino? Eh?

Neat little toy. Next round should be any other font taking on Comic Sans.

Could someone explain to me why Comic Sans is bad? (I agree that it's overused, but is it a bad typeface per se?) I just keep hearing this chorus of how terrible it is, but I don't have any design skillz to know WHY it's bad.

I admit the Comic Sans banning campaign got a little silly, I just used it as the easiest reference. People don't use it for what it was designed for, which is the case with most system fonts. I've always found it odd that people will pay for stock photography, but balk at spending money on getting the right font, and fonts can be quite inexpensive.

Font preferences are subjective and I'm sure the Arial fans will respond soon enough. Oh yeah Vidiot, they'll be coming for you! They'll go all sans-serif on your ass!

*goes and changes her MeFi font preference to Arial*
