One of the coolest gifts I was ever able to give me mother were two vintage, hand tinted postcards of the town where she grew up. Ocean Falls was so remote that there were no roads into town, you came in my boat, or float plane, and when the pulp mill shut down, the town just died. It used to have more than ten thousand people, and now has just a handful of retirees, and people who cater to fishing and hunting parties. I found the postcards, depicting the town when it was thriving, at an antique show in a mall, and snapped them up (all the while thinking "Eight dollars for a postcard. Damn!"). The first thing I did on this site, was look to see if it had any others, but sadly, no. posted by jacquilynne at 6:18 PM on October 6, 2003
Wonderful, hama7, thanks! On a first race-through (the list-by-topic is fascinating) this lighthouse particularly struck my fancy. The collection of Bohemians is very good too.
Mind you, this is all part of that heartening "Isn't the world a fascinating place?" feeling I always get after 25 hours of Yom Kippur! posted by MiguelCardoso at 7:46 PM on October 6, 2003
