I've bought a lot of stuff from drjays.com. They have a pretty nice site but it's always so damn slow. They need better servers or more bandwidth or something.

I recently made my first trip to Burlington Coat Factory (the actual store, not the website). Don't be fooled by the name: they have more than coats - and great prices too. Lots of the same stuff as Dr. Jays but way better prices.

I would laugh my ass off at anyone I saw dressed like those people (in private though, so they don't kick my ass.) I swear, the world has passed me by. I feel so OLD.

The comments are hilarious. It's amazing how critical they are of not matching designers and not showing the "kicks" (shoes) on pictures of women, and into colors matching. It's just bizarre. Stuff I didn't even notice (who cares what kind of watch you wear? Honestly!)

Points off for not showing the kicks because the outfit is supposed to be a coordinated ensemble - the rest may look good, but the wrong shoes will throw it all off. And because it's a ratings site, so the viewer needs all the appropriate info.

I love this, and I really needed the education - I've been out of the country for so long that I'm completely lost when it comes to U.S. fashion trends*. Now, somebody point to me to a fashion page for East Coast hipsters (you know, besides the MeFi meetup pics *smile*).

As a person of color this site is mad crazy. It must gall so many of you that are so twisted about the slang that many of the users at this site could really give a rats @$$ what you think. Do you think they spend their time trolling around the golf r-us website and giggle at the select language that golfers use what the heck is a mulligan anyway? If you want to play in their kitchen be ready to take the heat. No one is getting shot. No one is getting their feelings hurt. I'm glad that many of you have had a chance to see what these kids care about but don't be a hater and show them a modicum of respect. Fashion like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm with wonway. It's ridiculous how many people here are so ready to cringe at the slang. It's 100% discriminatory, period. Some of you, probably presuming yourselves to be "progressive" or "liberal", should be ashamed.

Just because other people aren't ready to kneel before the "standard" dialect doesn't mean they should be made fun of. People are different, and this applies even to language. But go ahead, keep trying to marginalize their culture, which you obviously see as being inferior to your own. Actually, don't do that.

Yeah, because there's no chance that a large number of MeFite hipsters will be actively adopting most of the slang here over the next few weeks. That isn't going to happen at all.

It's not funny because they're a subculture or whatever, it's funny because of the incongruity between the thug attitude and the 1950's housewife/Fab Five fussing. (It's also funny in a self-deprecating way, because we're old and out of touch and uncool and we don't get it, as plenty of people pointed out.) But look - now I've had to go and explain it, and it's not as funny anymore. Dayum girl, shizzle jiggy jiggy yo, etc.

The world where what you wear can help define the amount of respect you get is one which I do not want to be a part of.
However, most cultures use clothing to define themselves, and within the group clothing is often used to define status. Whether it is business, skate-boarding, surfing, golf or soccer moms, they all have thier own clothing rules.
The same goes for language.
That doesn't mean that these things cannot be laughed at by those outside the group, and I would say it shows a certain amount of humility to be able to laugh at oneself. Within groups where respect is paramount, this can be difficult and dangerous.
Luckily, my dress sense is fantastic, and can fit in with any group; ) Urban-cheap. That's what I'd call it.

Just because you say something doesn't make it true. Unless you mean "it's discriminatory against the people on that particular site". In which case, yeah, it is, but discrimination, not on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., but on the basis of brand matching and bad fashion sense isn't the kind of discrimination I find particularly "bad".

As someone who grew up in New York City in the 80's and 90's and listened to rap and shared that culture to some degree, I get a little frustrated when people do the whole mocking fo shizzle thing, as if real hip-hop slang/culture is that simple and ignorant (well ok half of it is, but there is as much depth and creativity there as anywhere else).

The hip hop I know and love was grimy and DIY and blue collar, it picked up where punk left off, it wanted to go away from mainstream consumer culture (while still being about fashion as well as music, breaking and graffitti), now hip hop IS consumer culture. And the reason is that it has been co-opted by kids like these.

These internet gangsters, it is funny, it's ok to laugh, it's just not okay to condescend. They are sooooo fucking fussy. When I see kids in Brooklyn and Queens wearing the knee length white t-shirts I just crack up because they look so much like little babies, thug pushing babys getting ready for beddie byes with their hard rock stares and pimp rolls.

When you present yourself as tough as part of your fashion and then it gets pushed over into total parody without you being aware of the irony, it is funny.

You can point and laugh at these kids and their speech, but keep in mind how much of what they say and do will end up in your own conversations in a few years. "Rock and Roll" was black slang too.

Remember Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack, making fun of golf culture, classically funny! and for almost the exact same reason. Some fashions deserve a good mocking. I'm surprised at your rush to prevent this cultural bull from being gored, when it so obviously needs it. I'm not saying they should change their style or even listen to me, but it's damn funny to read.

I live in Brooklyn and I see this kind of clothing pretty much all day (both good and bad), but to see suburban kids try to copy it and then try to sound all pissy about how it's not real street or gangster enough, ridiculous, they deserve as much mocking as any other people who post dumb things on the web.

Also, as far as no one getting their feelings hurt, have you read the comments on their site? They are very pointed, personal and extremely critical, many time going far beyond the outfit and just pointing out that the wearer is fat or has weird hair or is too poor to afford real brands. If nothing else, it seems reasonable to make fun of them just for their naked materialism.

Certainly, we can't know what's around the bend, but I'll bet in ten years, if any of these people look back on what they were wearing and saying, they'll have a laugh too.

Yup. There are a whole lot more black people in this world who don't talk like that than there are that do.

And I think that's the crux of the disagreement here. People who see black=hiphop see folks making fun of this way of speaking as making fun of black culture. People who see black>hiphop see folks as making fun of a certain subculture. And, just like I don't find making fun of the way American anime fans or candy ravers talk/write on the internet to be a bad thing, I don't think making fun of the commercialized hiphop subculture way of speaking as being a bad thing.

What's interesting to me is that this some people are seeing this as an issue of black (Street Style) vs. white (Mefi Style) when so many of the people on the Dr. Jays site are clearly asian and white. As bugbread said, for many of us "Hip-hop" stopped meaning "black" a long time ago.

As far as I'm concerned every kind of fashion needs both a good mocking and at the same time people should do wahtever the hell they wanna do when it comes to clothes and stuff.

But we tend to get uncomfortable when it's our own subculture being mocked and then gleeful when it's a subculture we dislike. Which is both understandable and kind of unfair.

flavor, if a link is put up that is about how people dress some will point and laugh, some will say nothing, others will comment - we do this in real life to varying degrees. You think I 'hate' naaw I just think it is hilarious that suburbanite kids are trying to act/look/talk like gangster wannabee's from the south side yo. This is coming from someone who's style of dress was sooooo outlandish at the time that a bank refused to open a account for me, was followed around by security guards in stores and generally treated like crap because of style of dress. (think punk with mohawks, converses, combat boots, army gear etc ala mid 80's in a small Canadian town)

What amazes me about the site and seems to have missed by you was that these kids are judging 'their own' more harshly than anyone here. I find the site interesting on a socialogical/cultural level and semi-facinated by the commentary following the pictures. As for the language it was hard at times to understand what-in-the-hell they were saying. I would have the same reaction to slang from the UK (do you know what a 'jaffa' is? A jammy, pagga?) or any number of other places.

So don't 'hate' the 'haters' ;)

Speaking of finding the site interesting on a sociological/cultural level: I'm surprised no one has commented on the backgrounds, especially the ones taken inside people's homes. Not a lot of white leather couches and glass-topped coffee tables to be seen, but there's an abundance of dated portraits and thrift-store-looking furniture. It's clear that a lot more money and energy is being spent on clothing than on decorating. I suppose that's why it's called conspicuous consumption.

P.S. I want to see a site exactly like this one, except devoted to cars.

When I first got hip to this site it was like playing the dozens fo the streetstyle set. Kinda like Show Time at the Apollo. You gotta give the people what they want to see or expect to get booed. If I walk out my house thinking I'm da bomb because I tried to match my shit, but instead I look last last year on a rack then I expect my people to let me know. Is this peer pressure? Yes. But its what they want. Hip hop isn't going to judge your Ambercrombie and Fitch crowd because they are to busy making up they're own style.

On the real there is a fine line between laughing with someone and laughing at someone. Those of you that are laughing at the clothes so be it. Its not your style.
