The operators of FleetCenter in Boston decided it'd be a good idea to auction off single-day rights to rename the stadium and give the proceeds to charity. Honorable idea. Unfortunately for them, the winner of Monday, February 28, was the infamously crude news site Fark. They held a competition this afternoon to decide what the name should be. The winning entry: "Fark.com UFIA Arena".

Delaware North Companies, Inc. - Boston reserves the right to approve names which are submitted in response to the "Single Day Naming Rights to Boston's FleetCenter" promotion.

The outcome of this one isn't hard to see.

argybarg: it's likely that Drew won't actually submit that one, for just that reason. The #2 finisher, "Fark.com Abe Vigoda Memorial Center" is hilarious for a completely different "pancakes"-like injoke reason.

How is naming a sports venue "UFIA" any less disgusting than naming is "FleetCenter"? Sure, they're disgusting for different reasons, but that's beside the point.

According to the FleetCenter calendar, there are no events on that day, so is $2500 a good deal ? I guess it depends on how much publicity is generated by the auctions.

The trick is to make sure that this isn't publicized until the signs actually go up, then BOMBARD THE MEDIA with definitions of UFIA and photos. Whee!

Now if only they could get a picture of General Ackbar saying "It's a FleetCenter!"...

I had to look up UFIA in the urban dictionary following the link on the FPP (not being a farker myself). I'm really glad I did because I remember the news story that spawned that...JV football kids from a coastal town in our high school conference. I didn't know that it had become an acronym. And as much as I like UFIA, I much prefer what the kids involved called it...the "three finger wiggle".

It is just comical how elitist some of you are when it comes to Fark. It's really just ugly, especially since the Farkers never rip on you guys -- you even have your own graphical replacement for "Some Guy" over there.

At least Fark maintains a decent uptime. And that's with Heineken spilled all over the mobo(s).

symphonik, I don't think that anyone in this thread trashed Fark. I don't read Fark but its not because I think its "beneath me" or anything...I just don't happen to read it. I also don't read DailyKos, which as a card carrying member of the Liberal Intellgentsia (tm) I think I'm required to.

Wait until there is an honest attack to bring out the "commoner than thou" card...I don't think that anyone in this thread was trying to be high and mighty.

symphonik That reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend, who just could not understand how I can flip between Howard Stern and NPR on the way to work. Sometimes I want the smart stuff, sometimes I want to laugh at fart jokes. Most of the time, I just want smart ways to pull off fart jokes.
