The DPRK discovers the Tragedy of the Commons. Can a capitalist North Korea be far behind? posted by ZenMasterThis at 6:54 AM on March 7, 2005
While the "oh we're so cool and hip and interwebbed" clique birthed at HotWired and moving to BB with Cory "I act like a petulant child when attacked" and Xeni and Joi and some spooky scifi writer and all the rest -- woah -- while they usually give me a really huge migraine, this is a fascinating post, thanks hipsters.

The best part is that the page was created by North Korea fanboys. I wonder what they did on their North Korea trips that made them want to go back and encourage others to make the journey. Maybe they just think dear leader is a sexy bitch. posted by mikeh at 8:23 AM on March 7, 2005
Maybe this is a good time to plug that MAKE magazine again. posted by crunchland at 8:26 AM on March 7, 2005
No, the news here is that Kim Jong-Il (and his cabal) made a video available on the internet, then got all pissy when someone actually steered traffic their way.
Kim's DPRK is pretty schizophrenic that way. posted by clevershark at 8:34 AM on March 7, 2005
How about javelin throwing while facing a large audience?
That looks like a large audience of children! So one must assume there are no frivolous javelin accident lawsuits in NK. posted by R. Mutt at 8:39 AM on March 7, 2005

Thanks to Dear Leader's tort reform, pretty soon there will be no frivolous javelin accident lawsuits in the US either. posted by junkbox at 8:53 AM on March 7, 2005
clevershark: the site is built by a spaniard and hosted in spain. People have been writing about this nutter for over 3 years (my second link.) It's actually kind of hilarious that XJ is treating this like a big scoop, like bloggers are going to take down the DPRK by quoting copyright law. Funny, if slightly misleading. Isn't this like getting into a fight with Sean Hannity's cousin, and then proclaiming "I fought FOX News and I won!!!"?
How about javelin throwing while facing a large audience?
I've done my share of silly "fun" picnic games and exercises while growing up in South Korea, but I've never seen a javelin throw competition. Weird.
I also thought the picture of the guards facing off was quite interesting.
It's standard procedure at the DMZ, JSA, etc. If you do a Google image search for "jsa", you'll see similar pics of soldiers from both sides patrolling the blue buildings used for negotiations. I'll also plug an excellent Korean film that uses a similar photo of soldiers as a stunning coda: JSA by Park Chan-Wook, director of Oldboy. posted by shortfuse at 9:15 AM on March 7, 2005
And oh yeah, what is this bullshit with putting a creative commons license on the torrent? It's not yours, you didn't make it, STFU noob. posted by cavalier at 11:35 AM on March 7, 2005
(Err, my "your" was not addressed to loquacious, but rather, the wingnut at BB) posted by cavalier at 11:36 AM on March 7, 2005
Hi, cavalier -- actually, the stupid CC license thing is a design limitation on prodigem, the torrent-hosting site I dumped the swf file on. They won't let you upload anything unless you choose a "yes" answer to the question "do you want to slap a creative commons license on this." The only workaround I could think of at the time was to select "require attribution = no" from that mandatory CC license sub-menu, because of course BoingBoing isn't the author of the file in the first place (duh, that's the whole point -- last thing I'd want to do is claim ownership). --XJ posted by xeni-jardin at 11:46 AM on March 7, 2005
So what you're saying is that you not only disavowed the copyright of the original makers of the flash file, but you abused the torrent site which is apparenlty set up to host only non-copyrighted material, all for a 3 year old meme? posted by crunchland at 12:32 PM on March 7, 2005
Heh -- well, if you read the KFA's original cranky note to BoingBoing, they *encouraged* people to host copies on other webservers, and later said they thought torrenting the video was a good idea. So, the rights holders don't have a problem with it, and neither do the folks at prodigem, as I checked with them prior to posting. Sorry, crunchland! posted by xeni-jardin at 12:35 PM on March 7, 2005
