Wow, they've meta-ed meta.

Wow, it's like one big RSS aggregator on a webpage.

All that's missing is ads... or maybe they're on the page but my filtering is too aggressive.

The usual approach for an ambitious site is to run at a loss until you've got reliable traffic and then start phasing in the ads.

I was building a site like this. Now that I see it action I realize what a waste of time it is. Thanks for bringing me to my senses.

Impossible for me to use, but I have heard people rave over it.

Wow, who knew that DHTML tooltips could quickly become so annoying?!? I never realized how important the pause before they display in windows was so important.

PopURLs: The web as it was an hour or so ago. (results may vary according to the frequency of RSS publication)

I like it: the internet is becoming an infinitely recursive fractal of aggregators. Cool.

I like the absence of some of the usual suspects, like BoingBoing. I only wish that sites like this had a little more of an international feel, with a little more representation of India and China, for instance. That'll come in time though.

If it shows up on its own lists, does the universe implode?

I've been using it for a while now as a sort of quick snapshot view. it isn't the easiest to read, even with the new color and font scheme options, but it is handy when you just want to get a quick zeitgeist infusion.

Quite. When I first saw PopURLs the first thing that struck me was that anyone who wanted to keep up with all/most/some of those websites would already be subscribed to the various feeds. Making the site totally and utterly pointless.

Given that its own MeFi post shows up on there, I'd say no.

It's quite beautiful, but god. Enormous. Aren't compilations supposed to simplify things?

I've been using Popurls for some time now and I love it. And contrary to some opinions here, it does have a point. Just because it doesn't fit in with your needs doesn't make it pointless. I have too many feeds I subscribe to already; Popurls is great for getting a quick, big picture of the most popular stuff on the web.

Everyday I read Blogs Now and DiggDot.us. Basically equivalent to this service and easier to read.

At some point, the internet is going to go full loop and stick its head right up its arse.

Some people might claim that it has already happened.

I'm considering building a site that aggregates PopUrl's links, and then asking PopUrl to include my new site's feed on the PopUrl website.

Heh. BlogsNow actually does use its own feed in its rankings.

Yes, thanks to you and this thread it can no longer be denied that this is true.

Now if you'll pardon me I must go find a helmet, a miner's headlamp and a 55 gallon drum of industrial toilet cleanser.

I use PopURLs occasionally, because it contains the stuff that there's absolutely no point for me to add to my feed reader -- they just get too many new items to queue everything up. PopURLs lets me just see what's there when I feel like looking without having to think about cleaning out the stuff I didn't look at.

It's less unreadable with the white background and large font, first 2 top-right unlabelled crytic-icons.

I was one of those who linked popurls inthread a few months ago, which proves that I have way too much time to waste, or epenis++, or something.

It is a useful site for obsessive compulsives. One of about a million of them at the moment, though. It'll be interesting to see which ones die on the vine, and which gain traction (like digg).

Mixing metaphors is like mixing fine whiskeys in the same cup -- the resulting mess may taste weird, but it still gets you drunk.

I haven't been able to discern what makes some of those media things show up on Popurls ... the photos from flickr aren't the ten most interesting. The videos from Youtube seem to be the most discussed, not the most interesting (and they really aren't, unless you like seeing Myspace whiners complaining about the lack of love they get from other Myspace whiners).

I also wish they'd link to the link in those digg listings instead of to the digg threads. It takes two clicks to see what I want ... and I definitely don't want to see the noise from diggers.

I have had Popurls in my startup group for awhile, but I find I only really look at that tab if I'm really, really bored.

What's up with the second link?

The FPP linked to my site's feed instead of my site. Bleh.

The FPP linked to my site's feed instead of my site.

That's the third link. The second link goes to the oldest example of a Cool Site Of The Day list I could find. The link to the feed is something I read in Safari, so it looks cool when I read it. Sorry Firefoxers.

p.s. Hello bbrown, I like your web site.
posted by airguitar at 1:59 PM on May 16, 2006

Ahh, the exclamation point as separate link. I don't know how it escaped me—it's practically a MeFi institution.
