I'n surprised he knew Chad was a country.

May I suggest Sierra Leone? I hear it's nice there this time of year. And they're REALLY fond of rich, morally condescending, white guys.

Damn him! How dare he tell a joke when there is so much suffering in the world?

Aaron,

I'm not offended by the joke. (Although I think he ripped it off from Leno.) I am, however, offended by HIM. But I gotta give you props, you don't miss a chance to defend him. I have no choice but to respect your fervor, however misguided I think it is. :-)

What about everyone elses fervor to attack him? This is funny, he made a joke, he is human. He is also underestimated.

I don't think Leno was quite the originator. "Chad" puns have been flying since day one, and they're so obvious as to not even be funny.

how bout this?

"The WSJ reports that yesterday, without realizing that his remarks were being broadcast on a feed to some White House reporters, President Bush told the heads of some Catholic charities that his faith-based social services initiative was linked to his goal of curtailing abortions, a connection he did not make when he announced the initiative earlier this week."

Wow. He really needs to watch those microphones, huh?
When he says "curtail," does he mean "discourage," which I can dig, or "make inaccessable," which is something else again.

In such a short time he's had so many incidents of the comments were inadvertently played variety that I fear for our ability to conduct diplomacy. Regan's "outlawed Russia forever" gaffe pales.

Then again, this does provide much-needed insight into the mental state of the president.

Or perhaps, these incidents were not so "inadvertant" after all... [insert ominous music]
He's playing us for fools!

Personally, I think he should be sent to Bulungi. (Conspiracy theorists may note that the current ambassador to Bulungi is named Chad. Oooo . . . )

It looks like the author of the article doesn't know the difference between tortuous and torturous.

And the only reason Nader didn't have any open mike mistakes is, no one was listening to him.

I'll let him off this one if he can point to Chad on a map without getting Condi to colour it in first.
