Jeez, as much as I hate Pauly Shore, I hate Texas (and Texans in big dumb hats) more!

Texas quiere decir: Amigos / Texas Means Friends.

I would have been so pissed if the guy wearing the giant hat was sitting in front of me, and then he gets up and ruins the show.

What is it with ex-TV comedians and camera phones?
posted by fungible at 6:15 AM on December 12, 2006

Mr_Zero, I don't think it's possible to 'ruin' a Pauly Shore show.

Seems pretty fake. Shore dives before he's hit.

That's okay. I'm sure some people will be glad to watch it more that once.

Shore dives before he's hit.

And you wouldn't?

I can't believe some people are so gullible and haven't already figured out that this is viral marketing.
posted by bluejayk at 6:28 AM on December 12, 2006

That's a fucking frightening episode. You can see the hat make the decision to hit Shore after someone in the crowd yells, "Hit him!" What an ugly moment.

No. Ducked maybe, but dive?

The whole thing looks faked anyhow.

My guess would be that anytime Pauly Shore is on stage it's a bad experience.

In the digg thread someone pointed out that in the club manager's blog he gets a thank you from a lady who thanks him for bringing Pauly Shore to Texas (WTF?!) and mentioned that her nephew was the "actor" who punched him. For what that's worth, but I go with attention getting ploy (not sure I would dignify it by calling it "viral marketing.")

The cop shows up "just in time" very conveniently. It's either fake or hilarious.

A little brain damage should make Pauly Shore slightly more funny.

I thought it was the brain damage that makes Pauly Shore as unfunny as he is. I mean, seriously, if that man isn't proof that it is in fact possible to smoke too much weed, I don't know who or what is.

Maybe an admin could change this to the Google Video link? That poor dude's blog is getting hammered into oblivion.

Staged.

dabitch : "ok, where's the footage? All I'm getting is dead wordpress."

Me too. I guess the story is that Paul Shore had trouble establishing a WordPress database connection Texas.

I don't think it was viral marketing, just a snarky comment about how quickly people shout 'fake', it's like a contest to see who is more cynical or savvy or something. It seems too pointless to be fake to me.

Apparently Pauly Shore CAN act.

That's how they get you, man!
posted by billysumday at 7:35 AM on December 12, 2006

I too hate the cynical rush to call everything a fake, but he doesn't get hit by the punch with much force. He's avoiding it and a cop shows up a second later to grab the guy on stage? It feels like a setup. Like some sort of fake bit to try and get some post-Kramer press for being edgy.
posted by mathowie at 7:37 AM on December 12, 2006

That did seem canned. Plus, that young man has a filthy mouth. Also, using "White Trash" at the end seemed so pat and planned out, like the inverted Richards moment. What's the date on this?
posted by mecran01 at 7:40 AM on December 12, 2006

Did the guy show up at a Pauly Shore show expecting something good?
posted by clevershark at 7:41 AM on December 12, 2006

I don't care how bad the comedian is, it is never ok to hit someone because of the things that come out of their mouth.
posted by hellphish at 7:49 AM on December 12, 2006

What? This is no "cynic contest".

Ok: "I'm not savvy and this was staged." How's that?

It's all too quiet and controlled after the punch is delivered.

Whenever someone lunges like that there's always a big melee immediately after where the two principles are kept apart from each other by 2 or 3 other guys.

It also happened after the Michael Richards event.

Welcome to the new form of has-been self-promotion. Morton Downy Jr was a trailblazer in this regard.

Whether it's staged or not isn't clear to me and I doubt it'd be clear to most people in the audience, so I'm disgusted that people laughed at it and kept laughing through the whole episode.

If you don't want to risk being insulted don't go see stand-up comic, and if you must react to trivial insults with violence you don't deserve to live. It's rather stupid too: "OOH, he dissed me so I'm gonna hit him, in public in front of witnesses and cops yet!"
posted by davy at 8:17 AM on December 12, 2006

Booze + bad comedy + hecklers + profanity = violence. Is this particularly surprising or entertaining to anyone? Andy Kaufman did this kind of thing so much better any with much more style. Pauly Shore? Uh, no so much.
posted by birdhaus at 8:25 AM on December 12, 2006

Whether it is staged or not, there's never any reason to go to Odessa, Texas.

By the way, for everyone ripping on Pauly Shore (which I completely understand) his movie Pauly Shore is Dead was supposed to be surprisingly decent and not Bio-Dome-esque at all.

The funny thing about the comparisons to Michael Richards is that if Pauly Shore had started screaming the N-word, that crowd would have gone from hostile to welcoming immediately. The guy in the cowboy hat would have brought a beer up on stage for Pauly instead of swinging at him.

BWAA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh jeez, this is wonderful!

The comedian in question is utterly lacking in post-Pauly talent, and it was Texas...jeez, when in Rome and all.

If you are going to get punched in Texas, at least be funny!

...hey, btw, now if Bill Hicks had been at either at this show in Texas, or the Michael Richards show in LA, we would all be treated to some real ass-bar-b-q'ing. But seeing as he's dead and all....
posted by mongonikol at 8:38 AM on December 12, 2006

so apparently bouncers like to let audience members stay on stage yelling at comedians, but punching them gets them sternly ejected. sure, this is real.

If it's scripted, look forward to the tearful post-white-trash apology on a B-list talk show like Carson Daly.
