Huh huh, fatties suck (Google Video)
posted by XMLicious (86 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: this sort of thing goes badly on metafilter.

If that's a real commercial (or hell, even if it's just a video someone made and uploaded) it's totally not cool. If they had just been portraying straight-laced versus wild, that'd be one thing, but a fat girl watching this video is explicitly getting the message "Not only are you fat, you suck in every other way too!" At least in the Apple ads, it makes sense that a PC is a nerdy businessman and a Mac is a cool casually-dressed artistic guy. This isn't a parody or even a re-doing of the Apple ads with personified game consoles, it's just a rip-off, a surface imitation, the Nintendo guys trying to ride Apple's coattails and being assholes while they're going about it. My mind's eye is imagining some Nintendo marketing stooges tossing a football around an office and saying "So PS3 sucks... what else sucks? Huh huh, fatties suck."

I'm overweight myself and I'm not into the whole "fat people are the last group it's okay to discriminate against" thing but this is right out.

Uh...yeah. Why exactly did you post it? To get more exposure for this dumb "ad"?

It's not clever, funny, or well-done. People will forget it. So should you. So should we all.

1.) That is not a real commercial, not by Apple or Nintendo. Do you really think a Nintendo advertisement would be that low quality, including a barely legible neon green "edited by" notation at the end?

2.) It's not funny, which is the biggest crime.

3.) At least in the Apple ads, it makes sense that a PC is a nerdy businessman and a Mac is a cool casually-dressed artistic guy

No, it doesn't. That's called marketing (or, more specifically, "branding"). I would be shocked if intentisve demographic research revealed that the majority of Apple computer users were "cool, casually dressed, artistic guys". In fact, I suspect your average Apple user looks quite similar to your average PC user. Some people might even use both!

4.) GYOBFW!

Nintendo didn't make this ad. This isn't an add. Apple and Nintendo didn't merge. This isn't discrimination. This isn't worthy of discussion. Front page posts are for interesting links, not getting an "Amen brother". You are into the whole "fat people are the last group it's okay to discriminate against" thing.
posted by spaltavian at 12:59 AM on January 22, 2007

Not even that. The message I got was that if you actually appreciate features and the thought that goes into tailoring a thing to it's intended audience, you're just a sucker. Make that a fat sucker in a sweatervest, sucker. If this is commentary, huzzah! If this is an ad, then hurf durf brandin' face, up your kiester with a pointy mace.

Think about this for a second. Now think about what Metafilter would look like if we all scoured Google Video, YouTube, and random blogs for attempts at humor so poorly executed they make you pray fervently to a dark god begging for the simultaneous internal combustion of the entire human race, leaving nothing in our wake but a global Pollack painting. Is this a Metafilter you could hold and cherish like a cuddly kitten or magical pixie that you caught deep in the woods one cold October night?

I would be shocked if intentisve demographic research revealed that...

I wasn't saying that they look like PC and Mac users, I was saying that they make sense as the personifications of a PC and Mac as those brands were being portrayed by the ad.

Hey, you can pin rage on me, but not outrage. I don't expect marketing guys to not be assholes.

I wouldn't be surprised if I heard someone called a "fattie" but it isn't some kind of witless outrage or an axe to grind if I say "hey, dickwad, you shouldn't say shit like that." This is the same thing, I just think that it might not be as evident to some people that it's just as offensive, hence the importance of posting it and holding out its assholosity.

And actually, I have to admit too that I was curious as to how many "Man, do fat people ever suck" comments would show up... I was genuinely curious how much outright abuse I would surface. But only one so far, which is cool. (Except, of course, for the "that's not a real ad, dumbass." But I give in on that one.)

On the topic of me being a dumbass... I've googled and googled unsuccessfully... can someone spell out for me what GYOBFW stands for?

Of course it's not a real commercial! It's done by the gaming/tech channel G4, as you can see their logo in the lower left-hand corner. This is nothing like Nintendo's actual Wii adds, an example of which you can see here.

Now, oddly someone has taken the original clip and added some rather insane intro and and took "credit" at the end of the clip for whatever reason, I think it really detracts from the humor, but that's the internet for you. Here is a copy of the origional g4 skit (there are a million copies on youtube, just search "wii ps3 g4")

At least in the Apple ads, it makes sense that a PC is a nerdy businessman and a Mac is a cool casually-dressed artistic guy

Well, that's what Apple wants you to think, and that's the entire point of the ads.

But yeah I'm really stunned that you thought this was a real advertisement from Nintnedo. You've essentially worked yourself into a lather based on an lame attempt at humor from low-budget 'chat' show on a C-list cable network.

Also, the line goes "If anyone here is a marketer, please kill yourself".

You see how that is much more effective? You can't just go pussy-footing around asking all nicely for marketers to not make up stupid shit - it's like asking an Eskimo to not have 197 words for snow. Making up stupid shit is a marketer's primary function.

No, the only way to deal with an infestation of marketers is good old fasioned violence. Stomping, fire, stonings, mass executions - the usual fare.

Well, that's not true. You can temporarily distract most marketers with gimmicky, heavily overdesigned coffee table books in lurid colors with startlingly brave substrate choices for bookcovers like translucent corrugated plastic, flourescent orange lucite, #20 grit sandpaper, pressed butterfly corpses or butter-tanned yak scrotum.

But if you manage to distract one you really, really should kill it. It's your duty to humankind.

posted by LooseFilter at 1:56 AM on January 22, 2007

it's like asking an Eskimo to not have 197 words for snow.
There are two principal fallacies in this myth. The first is that Eskimo languages have more words for snow than English does, when they may have a few more or a few less, depending on which Eskimo language. As in English, these words are related to each other: for example, blizzards and flurries are two different types of snow, but they are both recognized as 'snow' in the general sense. Speakers of Eskimo languages categorize different types of snow in a similar manner to English speakers.

The second fallacy comes from a misconception of what are to be considered "words". As in other polysynthetic languages, the use of derivational suffixes and noun-incorporation result in terms or language codes that may include various descriptive nuances, whether describing snow or any other concept. Because Eskimo is polysynthetic, it describes concepts in compound terms or 'words' of unlimited length.

Thank you, The God Complex. That was totally supposed to be a joke, son. I should have had my Eskimos hunting penguins instead of naming kinds of snow. Anyway, if you want to get pedantic Eskimos don't really technically exist, anyway, except perhaps as a misclassification.

Thanks for the various links, delmoi. I saw the G4 logo, I just thought a C-list cable network might get the C-list ads too. I guess I have alot to learn about TV.

I think that this being a lame TV skit still says as much as a Nintendo ad or even a made-for-google-video upload. And this thread still answers my curiosity about the ratio of hostility to indifference. Thanks for playing, everyone. I'm really not trying to be righteous or oppressed or anything, sorry if I come across that way, I just really think that's something there should be less of in the world.
posted by XMLicious at 2:17 AM on January 22, 2007

It's obviously a parody, and actually kind of funny (or at least was, back when it made the rounds). Definitely captures the spirit behind the Wii craze. I think it is odd that someone thought it was worth taking credit for adding the idiotic text at the beginning, odder still that someone would think the Apple ads make sense, while this doesn't, and oddest of all that someone would think this link alone is fpp material.

For future reference, it's easier to be stoic about it. Also, it's much easier to type "Sorry, I'm drunk. Please delete this." than it is to try and defend a stinker with misapplied, high-falutin' analysis. Just call a spade a fucking shovel already.
