Smart or Stoopid?

Are you Smart or Stoopid? A quick, entertaining and (for me) reasonably challenging way to determine your level of intelligence. Be sure to post your score.

Songs are the worst. Play me (or most people) 2 bars of a pop/rock song, and they'll likely name the artist and title, even if they hated it.

I have no idea how this ability benefitted our ancestors, unless predators only ate people who couldn't answer trivia questions...

So 300 some odd people have taken the test, and your score is compared against them.

Hmm, what could go wrong with that...

I suspect a 27 is much "smarter" than this test would let on. It's self-selecting smart people to begin with.

That random sample thing will get you every time.

Of course, if you give the test to a Bushman in Africa, and they get zero, does that mean they are brain-dead? Or maybe they've localized it for Swahili (wait, do the Bushman speak Swahili? I had a German teacher fluent in Swahili. She was proud of the fact there were only like a dozen or so people who could "officially" say that in the US, or so she said).

26, meh.

About 10 years ago, I actually toured the Tuborg plant, which also makes Carlsberg on contract. (Or maybe that's the other way around) The tour guide was this Alfred Hitchcock-esque fellow who spoke 9 languages, including, of course, excellent English. Even though my girlfriend-at-the-time and I were the only ones taking the tour, he insisted on projecting his voice as though he was addressing a crowd of 50. At the end, we got to drink all the beer we wanted -- except my gf doesn't drink beer, and I only had two because I had to drive. So, yeah, I got that one right.

Also, any car enthusiast at all will know what a freakin Evo is. It's almost like asking who makes a 911. Sheesh!

And rap is simplistic, production-generated garbage that steals real musicians' work and calls it their own. Not that I'm bitter.

b1tr0t, once again you prove to be one of my heroes. I was going to go there and call out the different models, but I'm not Car Guy enough to defend myself, and I knuckled under.

Thankfully you were here to make the post I would like to have made myself.

Not out of spite or anything... Ok, maybe a little out of spite. But spite filled with love. Really.

Unless you happen to know that BMW had a series of Evolution M3s in Europe, and Mercedes had an Evolution E190 as well. Then you might begin to suspect that just about every performance car has a rally edition. Unless you happen to know the special designations for all three of the listed cars.

That's great, but Subaru and Nissan were the only other choices. (Besides, the BMW and Merc are no longer made...)

Nice obscure car knowledge though. +1 for you.

b1tr0t : "The Evolution is a recent arrival in the US, they are proably far more common and well known in Europe and Asia."

Perhaps, but car names also vary from place to place (the same models of Japanese cars often have different names in the Japanese market than the North American market).

scottreynen : "Couldn't an intelligent argument be made that people in Iraq have been effected, as well as affected, by the war?"

"People were brought about by the war"?

quin : "For the record, what is the statute of limitations on Mefi posts?"

They automatically close one month after the initial post, except AskMe, which is open ended.

This doesn't measure intelligence. It measures your score on a trivia exam, then compares it to other scores. It's something like a "trivia IQ" test. None of the questions have much if anything to do with intelligence.

Oh, and I got 27, because I happened to be in a chemistry lecture and had my calculator beside me for the "minutes in a day" question.

I'll go first: 28!

Thanks, I needed that.

Why is everybody posting nothing but their score on this shitty little quiz? There's no evidence behind the answers, so they have no empirical value as data; it's just pissing into the wind.

Why aren't we discussing the implications of such a narrow-minded, mostly trivial, and America-centric test claiming to measure intelligence?
posted by tehloki at 8:44 AM on January 29, 2007

I think it doesn't so much measure intelligence as knowledge, and a specific kind of knowledge at that.

I took it again today, trying to change some of the answers I wasn't sure of, and got only 25. Obviously, it's going to take some practice to get a perfect score. I'll be sure to post back daily with my results. :-)
