The Karuna Group splintered from the LTTE sometime back -- it is backed by the government. There is a lot more background in this detailed report, also by Human Rights Watch.

I'm not sure to be honest.

This is just one of many bad things happening there now. It's been a bad year. The government has been pushing quite hard into rebel held territory in the past months, so there are hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the Tamil North and East of the Island.

It's still an issue that a lot of people are confused about or don't know much about - although you MeFi boffins always seem up with the times. Which is why a post like this would be relevant.

I can't give any sort of good commentary on this issue without turning into a radid frothing type person which isn't very helpful. I'm bias, of course. Knowing that my father's childhood home is now being used a government base up in Jaffna, and their other house is surrounded by landmines.

Pretty much it's just all really, really fucked.

It's amazing how fast things are falling apart over there. I got married in Sri Lanka just before New Years and things seemed relatively quiet then.
