The drill sergeant says, "You are now in the Bronx. A black van stops in front of you. Three African Americans get out and bitterly insult your mother. Before each machine gun burst, I want to hear a loud 'Motherfucker'."

Compare and contrast: Haji Girl.

Compare and contrast: the Germans are supposed to be our allies. And "Hadji Girl" wasn't officially sanctioned training.

I can't wait for Toby Keith to write a response song about how the all-American blacks of the Bronx will rise up to fight back against the German occupation.

And the moral of the story is: Never insult the mother of the person at the other end of the machine gun.

Think of blacks and shoot, German soldier told -- "Video of army instructor issuing racist order latest in string of incidents."

It would be interesting to know if any American blacks from the Bronx are currently serving in American military units in Germany. I'd bet there are at least a few.

You suck, Den Beste.

You're sure they're German? Maybe they're Dutch and want New York back.

Let's see. We have:

- A single-link
- news item
- posted some two days after its widespread syndication
- whose content is mischaracterized in a
- deliberately obtuse and provocative manner
- for no clear purpose other than to be a shit-disturber.

Congrats, man: that's the perfect - nay, the Platonic - fuckfecta.

Huh.

And if you're going over the top anyway, why make sure to use the designation 'African Americans' instead of some of all the other words? Seems weird to me. (and terrible, yes. Flagged).

SdB: It would be interesting to know if any American blacks from the Bronx are currently serving in American military units in Germany. I'd bet there are at least a few.

If so, they could retaliate: You are in Paffenkottenbitzenheim. Three white boys get out of a Mercedes and insult your mother ... Act!

AwkwardPause: Why make sure to use the designation 'African Americans' instead of some of all the other words?

Such as? 'African Americans' is the preferred nomenclature (I think), and apparently that's what the drill sergeant said.

The Arab Mind is "probably the single most popular and widely read book on the Arabs in the US military". It is even used as a textbook for officers at the JFK special warfare school in Fort Bragg. The result is a collection of outrageously broad - and often suspect - generalisations. Patai asserts, for example, that Arabs "hate" the west... Positive characteristics are mentioned, but are given relatively short shrift.

General compares militants to 'Satan' Boykin had said, among other things, that Muslims worship an "idol," not a "real God," and that America's enemy in the fight with Islamic extremism was "a guy called Satan." His comments, captured on videotape, have been aired repeatedly on U.S. television.

The wide-ranging poll also shows that 58% of those serving in country say the U.S. mission in Iraq is clear in their minds... 85% said the U.S. mission is mainly "to retaliate for Saddam's role in the 9-11 attacks"

Rape fears lead women soldiers to suicide, death NEW YORK — U.S. female soldiers in Iraq were assaulted or raped by male soldiers in the women’s latrines, and an alarming number committed suicide... "In the 100 degree heat, they were dying of dehydration in their sleep."

The 2003 Military Times Poll reveals a military more conservative, more Republican, and one that considers itself to be morally superior to the nation its serves. Two-thirds said they think military members have higher moral standards than the nation they serve. More than 60 percent called the country's moral standards only fair or poor.

What he actually said: "Sie sind jetzt in der Bronx. Ein schwarzer Van hält vor ihnen. Drei Afroamerikaner steigen aus und beleidigen ihre Mutter aufs Gröbste. Vor jedem Feuerstoß will ich ein lautes 'Motherfucker' hören."

Bletch: American blacks can now breath easier and no longer need feel any offense.

Steven C. Den Beste: The fact is, this is largely a reflection of american media portrait of African Americans. You can't expect people in other countries to be sensitive to all the racial and ethnic taboos in the United States, because frankly, they're not. A lot of that is our fault.

In any event, even if this is considered generally poor form in Germany, it doesn't matter. It may just have been dreamed up by the guy giving the orders, not Andrea Merkel.

preferred nomenclature

That's exactly the disconnect -- on the one hand he's playing on racist stereotypes, and on the other using the 'preferred nomenclature.'

Steven: I'm an American black, and I'm not offended. So there.

(Well, I'm slightly offended, but I'm not going to get worked up about it)

And what exactly is the stereotype? That black people drive vans? Or that they tend to use offensive language? -- Gee, I wonder where the drill sergeant got that one from...

I am shocked - SHOCKED! - that a German army officer is exhibiting racist tendencies!

Don't get it. Is there something here? Maybe I'm just dumb.
posted by MarshallPoe at 2:59 PM on April 15, 2007

And what exactly is the stereotype?

That black men in the Bronx are hostile and threatening. I'm sure that American DIs are much more culturally sensitive as it concerns the motivation and training of their own troops.
