Yes, it *does* look like big blue slices of salmon! That is weird. Wonder if it means anything about the meat of the fish looking like the water it swims in?
I saw this somewhere before - I forget where and I'm too lazy to look it up, but someone said it was wind erosion on glaciers. Makes sense to me. posted by AV at 1:56 PM on July 8, 2007
Good. I'm not the only one who thought it looked like salmon. posted by malaprohibita at 2:46 PM on July 8, 2007

There aren't any salmon in Antartica unless they're very, very lost.
That looks like very old ice (blue color) that has been exposed to high winds/ meltwater (sculpted edges). The fissures probably have something to do with the meltwater but IANAG (I am not a geologist) so take that with a grain of salt. Whatever caused it, it's really beautiful, thanks for the post! posted by fshgrl at 2:51 PM on July 8, 2007
Hmm, yeah, a little bit of explanation would be nice. I looked at the pics and thought, "huh, neat photoshop." But then I come here and apparently they're all real. What gives? posted by afx237vi at 2:54 PM on July 8, 2007
Methinks that's wind abrasion, rather than a 'frozen tsunami'. Still pretty cool though. posted by Happy Dave at 3:16 PM on July 8, 2007
I've seen these pictures around quite a bit lately; it looks like a glacier being pushed up out of the ice to me.
A frozen tsunami crashed into Barrow, Alaska last January, causing all sorts of damage. posted by rhapsodie at 3:26 PM on July 8, 2007

lol, in saying Wonder if it means anything about the meat of the fish looking like the water it swims in? I meant ocean fish meat looking like frozen ocean water.
Trying to Google the images, find out about them, there was nothing, so I wondered if the tsunami idea was sensationalising wind shear. But the pics are still way cool! posted by nickyskye at 3:42 PM on July 8, 2007

Is it wrong of me to want to set up a tap on this thing and bottle it to sell to urban dwellers? Pictures of the "tsunami" pre-meltdown would be on the bottle. posted by Burhanistan at 4:50 PM on July 8, 2007
It's not salmon, sillies! Some Japanese whalers obviously couldn't finish one of their blue whale sashimi meals. posted by UbuRoivas at 5:27 PM on July 8, 2007
